1. Al Fatihah (The Opening)
Makkah Period
1. IN THE NAME OF GOD, THEALL-MERCIFUL, THE ALL-COMPASSIONATE
2. All praise and gratitude (whoevergives them to whomever for whatever reason and in whatever way from thefirst day of creation until eternity) are for God, the Lord of theworlds,
3. The All-Merciful, theAll-Compassionate,
4. The Master of the Day of Judgment.
5. You alone do We worship and fromYou alone do we seek help.
6. Guide us to the Straight Path,
7. The Path of those whom You havefavored, not of those who have incurred (Your) wrath (punishment andcondemnation), nor of those who are astray.
10. Yunus (Jonah)
Makkah Period
IN THE NAME OFGOD, THE ALL-MERCIFUL, THE ALL-COMPASSIONATE
1. Alif. Lam. Ra. These are theRevelations included in the Book full of wisdom.
2. Does it seem strange to people thatWe reveal to a man from among them, saying: "Warn all humankind (of theconsequences of the way they follow), and give those who believe theglad tidings that they have a sure footing with their Lord (on accountof their belief, faithfulness, and righteous deeds)." (Is it because ofthis that) the unbelievers say: "This (man) is clearly a sorcerer?"
1
3. Surely your Lord is God, Who hascreated the heavens and the earth in six days, then He establishedHimself on the Supreme Throne, directing all affairs (as the sole Rulerof creation). There is none to intercede with God unless after He grantsleave. That is God, Your Lord, so worship Him. Will you still notreflect (on this fundamental truth) and be mindful?
6
4. To Him you are all bound to return:a promise from God in truth (therefore certain to happen). Heoriginates creation, then He brings it forth anew (in another world) tothe end that He may reward with equity those who believe and do good, righteous deeds. Whereas, for those who disbelieve (and die asunbelievers) there is a drink of boiling water and a painful punishmentbecause they persistently disbelieve.
5. He it is Who has made the sun aradiant, illuminating light, and the moon a light reflected, and hasdetermined for it stations, that you might know (how to compute) thenumber of the years and to measure (time). God has not created that butwith truth (for a definite purpose and meaningfully). He sets out indetail the signs (and proofs of the truth) for a people seekingknowledge.
6. In the alternation of night and day(with their periods shortening and lengthening), and all that He hascreated in the heavens and the earth, surely there are signs(manifesting truth) for a people who keep from disobedience to Him inreverence for Him.
7. Those who have no expectations tomeet Us and are well-pleased with the present, worldly life and (neitherlooking nor seeing beyond it) are content with it, and those who areheedless of Our Revelations and Our signs (manifested to them in theirinner worlds and in the outer world):
8. Those are they whose final refugeis the Fire because of what they have been earning.
9. Surely for those who believe and dogood, righteous deeds, their Lord will guide them by virtue of theirbelief to a happy end: rivers will flow at their feet in the Gardens ofbounty and blessing.
10. Therein their invocation will be:"All-Glorified You are, O God! (You are absolutely exalted above havingany defects and doing anything wrong.)" And their greeting (to eachother and from God and the angels) will be: "Peace!" And theirinvocation will close with "All praise and gratitude are for God, theLord of the worlds!"
11. If God were to hasten for humanbeings the ill (which they have earned) in the same manner as theyhasten (the coming to them of what they consider to be) the good, theirterm would indeed have been decreed over for them. But We leave thosewho do not expect to encounter Us in their rebellion blindly wandering.
12. When affliction befalls (such) aperson, he invokes Us (in every situation), lying down on his side orsitting or standing; but when We remove his affliction from him, he goeshis way as if he had never invoked us for an affliction that befellhim. So to those wasteful ones (who have wasted their God-givenfaculties and committed excesses) are the things they have been doingdecked out to be appealing.
13. Assuredly We destroyed manygenerations before you when they committed wrongs (in their deeds, intheir measures and judgments, and in their response to the truth): theMessengers raised from among them came to them with the clear proofs ofthe truth, but it was plain that they would not believe. Thus do Werecompense the guilty people committed to accumulating sin.
14. Then We made you successors afterthem on the earth, so that We might behold how you act.
15. When Our Revelations, clear asevidence and in meaning are recited (and conveyed) to them, those whohave no expectations to meet Us say (in response to Our Messenger):"Either bring a Quran other than this or alter it." Say: "It is not forme to alter it of my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me.Indeed I fear, if I should rebel against my Lord, the punishment of anAwful Day."
16. Say (also): "If God had so willed,I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have brought it toyour knowledge. I lived among you a whole lifetime before it (began tobe revealed to me). Will you not reason and understand?"
40
17. Who is more in the wrong than hewho fabricates falsehood in attribution to God or denies His Revelationsand His signs (in the universe and in their own selves). Surely thedisbelieving criminals will not prosper.
18. They worship, apart from God,things or beings that can neither harm nor benefit them, and they say:"These are our intercessors with God." Say: "Would you inform God ofsomething in the heavens or the earth that He does not know?All-Glorified is He, and absolutely exalted above all that theyassociate with Him."
19. Humankind (in the beginning) werebut one community following one single way but later they differed andbegan following different ways. Had it not been for a decree alreadyissued by your Lord (postponing the final, decisive judgment until anappointed term), it would indeed have been judged between them inrespect of all that they differ on.
1
20. They say: "Why isnt a miraculoussign (of a different sort) sent down on him from his Lord?" Say, then:"The Unseen belongs to God alone (He does whatever He wills and only Heknows what the future will bring): therefore, wait and see, indeed I tooam with you among those who wait."
21. Whenever We let the (unbelieving)people taste an act of grace after a hardship which has visited them, they at once contrive some plot against Our Revelations. Say: "God ismore swift in enforcing His will (and making any plot rebound on thosewho conceived it)." Surely Our (heavenly) envoys (angels) are recordingwhat they are devising.
22. He it is Who conveys you on theland and the sea. And when you are in the ship, and the ships run withtheir voyagers with a fair breeze, and they rejoice in it, there comesupon them a tempest, and waves surge towards them from all sides, sothat they are sure that they are encompassed (by death with no way out),they call upon God, sincerely believing in Him alone (as the onlyDeity, Lord, and Sovereign): "If You save us from this, we will mostcertainly be among the thankful."
23. But when He has saved them, theybehave rebelliously on earth, offending against all right. O humankind!Your rebellion is only against yourselves. (What you seek and get by allyour offenses is only) the enjoyment of the present, worldly life, thereafter to Us is your return, then We will make you understand whatyou were doing (and call you to account).
