Chapter 1 - Importance and Benefits of Confidence

Confidence is closely related to assurance. It is knowing and being aware of your strengths and value. When you believe in your own power, judgment and ability, you can say that you are a confident person.

Confidence is not arrogance. You are not confident when you put other people down to lift yourself higher. You are also not confident when you act brashly to overemphasize your strengths.

You have a good amount of confidence when your self-assessment is close to the truth. Watch out for how you behave because it also reflects your level of confidence. Confident people generally maintain proper posture, look people in the eye when talking, and have a firm handshake and a clear and loud voice.

The Importance of Confidence

Some people disregard the value of confidence. They are misguided because confidence is a crucial aspect of life. You need confidence to do a lot of things, including reaching for your goals. If you lack confidence, your odds of failing become higher than your odds of succeeding.

When it comes to attracting a partner, confidence actually ranks higher than physical attractiveness.

A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science has concluded that confidence shows. The study involved several male participants and those who wore cologne showed more confidence and photographed better.

In another study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, it was found that men tend to feel worse about themselves when their female partners position higher in the corporate ladder.

Confidence is also important if you want to succeed academically and professionally. Researchers found that confident children are more likely to become confident adults.

Moreover, overconfidence is beneficial at times. Researchers from the University of California San Diego and University of Edinburgh have proven this theory by conducting a study. They have found that when you display confidence, you have a higher probability of achieving your goal, despite lacking certain skills or abilities. When you fight for something that you truly value, you can succeed with overconfidence.

Then again, you also have to be careful. Although overconfidence can be helpful, it can also backfire. For example, avoid thinking positively but blindly. Overestimating your abilities may cause you to get overwhelmed at tasks or hamper your ability to perform properly.

Are There Health Benefits to Confidence?

Yes, there are. Confidence is good for both your mind and body.

Confidence gives you greater self-worth, making you feel more valuable. This encourages you to recognize and appreciate your talents and skills.

Confidence frees you from self-doubt, making you stop questioning and doubting yourself. You become happier and more motivated to turn your dreams into reality.

Confidence makes you more optimistic. When you are confident, you become more attentive to the goodness of life. You stay strong despite criticisms, failures, obstacles and adversities.

Confidence reduces your social anxiety. People who are socially anxious tend to be insecure with their self-worth. When you are confident, you do not get threatened by other peoples harsh opinions. This allows you to pursue what you set out to do and succeed in it.

Confidence keeps you motivated, so you can continue to reach for your goals. It makes you realize that you are good enough and capable of doing great things. It also keeps you relaxed, comfortable, and at ease with yourself and other people.

Confidence helps you sleep better. When you are free from stress, you have peace of mind. This allows you to clear your mind of negative thoughts and enjoy a restful sleep.

What Happens When You Lack Confidence?

Self-confidence and self-esteem are actually much more important than you may have thought. In fact, they are necessary for your psychological survival. If you do not have a good measure of self-worth, you will have a difficult time facing complex challenges in life. You will be unable to form judgments and decide on what you want to become.

The way you perceive yourself basically determines how you set the tone on how other people should see you. When you believe in yourself, it will show in your words and actions, and other people will believe in you, too. On the contrary, if you doubt your capacity, other people will also start to doubt your credibility.

The Buddhists have this belief that low self-esteem is actually a delusion or a negative emotion, which exaggerates ones limitations in terms of quality, capacity and growth potential.

This means that if your self-confidence and self-esteem are low, you can spiral downwards and lose control of yourself. You may begin to see yourself as a victim who is incapable of defending himself. You may also feel insignificant, excluded, unloved or ignored. You may also start to internalize the criticism of other people.

If you want to live a good and satisfying life, you have to be satisfied with what you have and believe in yourself. If you constantly strive to please others because of your low self-confidence and self-esteem, you will never be happy. You have the power to change your life, if you would only realize it.
