PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Several books are available on the anatomy and physiology of plants, but only a few deal comprehensively with the interdependence of cellular structure and function in the development of different plant organs. The study of plant-growth processes has become multidisciplinary. No longer is it the territory of the botanist alone. Great contributions are being made by investigators trained in other disciplines, notably biochemistry, ecophysiology, and molecular biology. The many major advances made since the early 1970s in understanding ultrastructural and biochemical events in plant growth and development need to be collated and a consolidated overview created. This exercise is essential not only to disseminate information but also to determine whether new concepts are emerging from the recent data.
