The definitive resource on surgical flaps from renowned MD Anderson plastic surgeons

Handbook of Reconstructive Flaps by Matthew Hanasono and Charles Butler reflects contributions from clinicians associated with the prestigious MD Anderson Cancer Center. The institution is internationally recognized as one of the worlds premier reconstructive centers and renowned for its Reconstructive Microsurgery fellowship program. Seven parts organized anatomically detail flaps used for the head/neck, chest, back, abdomen, pelvis, upper extremity, and lower extremity, followed by an eighth part on lymphedema. Each flap or procedure includes pertinent anatomy, indications for usage, preoperative considerations, a concise step-by-step description of the operative setup, the actual procedure, and donor site closure.

Nevertheless, this does not involve, imply, or express any guarantee or responsibility on the part of the publishers in respect to any dosage instructions and forms of applications stated in the book. Every user is requested to examine carefully the manufacturers leaflets accompanying each drug and to check, if necessary in consultation with a physician or specialist, whether the dosage schedules mentioned therein or the contraindications stated by the manufacturers differ from the statements made in the present book. Such examination is particularly important with drugs that are either rarely used or have been newly released on the market. Every dosage schedule or every form of application used is entirely at the users own risk and responsibility. The authors and publishers request every user to report to the publishers any discrepancies or inaccuracies noticed. We dedicate this book to our mentors, families, and patients. To our mentors, our sincerest thanks for
all that you have taught us. To our families, we thank you for your constant support and bringing
meaning to the work that we do. To our patients, we are inspired by and stand in awe of your
bravery and humanity. We have written this book for our students, residents, and fellows.

Preface

We have both been honored to practice surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center during our careers. MD Anderson Cancer Center is recognized as one of the top cancer treatment centers in the world. However, what we are especially proud of is our Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellowship Program. Both of us have served as program directors of this fellowship and Dr. Butler is now chair of the department. As such, we have had the privilege of overseeing the training of individuals who have gone on to become some of the worlds top reconstructive surgeons. At the time of this writing, over 150 individuals have graduated from our program. An equally impressive, though not mutually exclusive group, are those who have belonged to our faculty at one time or another, many of whom have been promoted to leadership positions at some of our nations top academic institutions. Teachers and former students have come together with great enthusiasm to produce the text you currently have in your hands.
