All scheduling software is difficult to learn for a number of reasons. AUTHORS COMMENT

As a professional project planner and scheduler, I have used a number of planning and scheduling software packages for the management of a range of project types and sizes.

The first books I published were user guides/training manuals for Primavera SureTrak and P3 users. These were well received by professional project managers and schedulers, so I decided to turn my attention to Microsoft Project 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and now Microsoft Office Project 2021. This book follows the same proven layout of my previous books. I trust this book will assist you in understanding how to use Microsoft Project on your projects. Please contact me if you have any comments on this book.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this book is to provide you with a method for planning and controlling projects using Microsoft Office Project 2021 or 365 and earlier versions in a single project environment up to an intermediate level. This book does not cover Microsoft Project Online which is a completely different software package

Microsoft Project 2021 is a minor upgrade to Microsoft Project 2019 with very few functional differences. This book highlights the important differences between Microsoft Project 2021 and earlier versions; therefore, this book may be used for learning these earlier versions.

The screen shots in this book were captured using Microsoft Project Professional 2021 using Windows 10. Readers using Microsoft Project Professional will have more menu options than those using Microsoft Project Standard. These additional menu options will operate when a project is saved to a Microsoft Project Server. Microsoft Project Standard will not operate with Microsoft Project Server and has fewer functions than Microsoft Project Professional operating with Microsoft Project Server.

Update resourced projects

Customize the project options

Understand the different techniques for scheduling.

The book does not cover every aspect of Microsoft Project, but it does cover the main features required to create and update un-resourced and resourced project schedules. There are some chapters at the end of the book covering some more advanced features of the software. It should provide you with a solid grounding, which will enable you to learn the other features of the software by experimenting with the software, using the Help files and reviewing other literature and forums.

This book has been written to minimize superfluous text, allowing the user to locate and understand the information contained in the book as quickly as possible. It does NOT cover functions of little value to common project scheduling requirements. If at any time you are unable to understand a topic in this book, it is suggested that you use the Microsoft Project Help menu to gain a further understanding of the subject.
