This book is based on my thesis which was accepted for a PhD at the University of Birmingham. As every PhD candidate knows, a work like this can only come about with the help and support of other people. Although not all of them can be named here, it is an obligation which I am following willingly, to acknowledge all their help and support.
First, I want to express my gratitude to the staff of the various archives in which I conducted my research. Here I want to mention in particular the staff of the Historisches Archiv der Deutschen Bundesbank, who were extremely kind and helpful despite their workload during the preparation for the Bundesbanks 50th Anniversary. The staff of my favourite archive, the Bundesarchiv Koblenz, also have to be mentioned. Their friendly help and good humour brightened up many research days. My thanks goes also to Frau Dr Kchling of the Historisches Archiv der Kreditanstalt fr Wiederaufbau. Despite her massive workload and her busy schedule in preparing the Kreditanstalts 50th Anniversary, she patiently produced all the files and documents for me and supplied me with various Hausmaterialien related to the topic and which proved to be most useful. Our discussions, sadly too few due to her busy schedule, provided me with much insight into the structure, task and history of the Kreditanstalt fr Wiederaufbau.
On the institutional side I have to express my thanks to the University of Birmingham which provided me with a grant under its German Initiative scheme, and to the School of Historical Studies at the University of Birmingham, which extended the grant.
Much of my research could be only done because good friends offered me their hospitality. Without their kindness I would not have been able to spend so much time in the archives for my primary research and this book would not be what it is. My warm thanks goes to Evi Halbich, Nils Mayer, Claire Mason and Dom Williamson. They always had an open door for me and made me feel welcome and never showed how bored they were when I told them about my research.
I feel much obliged to, and want to express my thanks to Dee Fellows, Katherine Dixon, James Williams and John Washbourne.
I am also indebted to Prof. Scott Lucas, who, despite his very busy schedule, always had time for a chat and provided important information and details on American policy both in occupied Germany and the wider context of the Cold War. I am most grateful to the best supervisor I could possibly have. Dr Sabine Lee guided me through my topic with constructive criticism, suggestions and encouragement which has meant a lot to me. She always found time for discussions and because these were often controversial and stimulating for my research they became a source of inspiration, particularly in some dark hours. Dr Lees dedication to her PhD student went well beyond the call of a supervisors duty and will always be a source of motivation and inspiration for me now that I am supervising students myself. Our discussions and her advice found once more its expression in this book and it is my pleasure to say thanks to her yet again.
Finally, I want to thank my family who provided me with a safe home base whenever I needed one. Above all else, my love and gratitude goes to my partner Juliane Schwarz. How much she endured and how much patience she needed with me during the years she alone knows.
