The following Top 10 SEO tips are simple but highly effective techniques that can be used to improve your website search engine rankings to boost traffic, and ultimately, sales.
1: Quality Incoming Links
This is by far the most effective top SEO tip. Encourage high authority, industry and niche related websites to link to the pages on your website. This is an important factor in optimizing your site in search engine results. Quality inbound links from other websites and blogs help search engines find your website and understand what your web pages are about. In addition to the traffic these links may bring, many search engines will also treat these links as editorial votes for your site, and the more votes you have from quality related sites, the better your site will perform in search result pages.
However, due to recent updates by major search engines, link quality is now more important than quantity. The days of pointing thousands of low quality links to your website using link networks and automated software to boost your rankings are well over. In fact, the use of such back-linking techniques could well get your website penalized or even banned altogether!
Do not use any automated link building software, directory submission software, or other automatic link building techniques. Ensure all links are from high quality authority sites with unique titles and descriptions where appropriate. Anchor text containing your main keywords should also not exceed 30% of all inbound links as this makes for a more natural looking link profile.
2: Thorough Keyword Research
It is vital to the success of your website to do some comprehensive keywords research to identify the most popular key words and phrases related to your website.
Investigate; who is your target market? What keywords or phrases do they most often use to search for your products or services on the Internet?
Concentrate on keywords directly related to your niche market or demographics. Construct a list of keywords and phrases to target your SEO and work them into your website titles, descriptions, Meta Tags, image alt tags and web page content.
For location based businesses and services you should also include this location information among your keywords. An example for a pizza delivery firm based in New York should target phrases such as New York Pizza Delivery .
Each individual web page should target one or two keywords only, with your home page targeting the most broadly used terms and supplemental pages targeting more specific words and phrases.
NEVER target keyword(s) that are outside of your topic or niche as this is considered as keyword spamming by most search engines, and therefore likely to cost you a penalty in the rankings.
3: Quality Text Information
Search engines look for informative text in various locations on your website to understand the topic of your web pages and return useful, quality information in search result pages. Search engines can't read image files. Video content, or animations etc., they need some normal informative text to read.
Give search engines plenty of relevant text to read, including your keywords and phrases to enhance your SEO. Work your keywords in a natural sounding way into your page text, towards the start, middle and end. You should also make one of these instances bold, and display another in italics.
An additional benefit of providing quality, useful and helpful information on your website is that other site owners are more likely to link to your content, and you will rewarded for these additional inbound links.
The size of your content can also be an important factor and so you should endeavor to ensure all of your pages contain at least 500 words.
It should be noted that the quality of your page(s) are measured in a number of ways, therefore try to avoid falling at the first hurdle by checking your pages for spelling and grammar errors.
4: Incorporate Keywords
Use your keywords for most effective SEO within the content of your web pages. Incorporate your keywords into the text of your pages, in moderation, by adding relevant text to;
Heading Tags
Incorporate your keywords in to the header tags on your page, placing the most important key phrase at the start of your
tag and secondary keywords into your
tag.
Internal and External Links
Use keywords in your anchor text (the clickable text of a link) when linking to both internal and external pages.
Images
Use your keywords within image filenames and within the alt parameter of the tags for the images on your page.
Description & Keyword Meta Tags
