INTRODUCTION
A COUNTRY IN CRISIS
We are living in the Information Age. With a few clicks on our phones, we can find more information on diets, disease, supplements, and exercise than we could ever hope to digest in a lifetime. According to recent reports, 80 percent of Internet users in this country, which is about 93 million Americans, have searched online for a health-related topic. So many people are actively searching for answers because theyre overweight and besieged by chronic disease, and theyre hoping a source on the Internet can provide a solution to those problems.
BMI is calculated by dividing a persons weight by his height.
Its no secret that our society is facing an epidemic in the form of metabolic disorders. Its one of the reasons Ive devoted my career to helping people alleviate the metabolic disorderrelated discomfort and chronic illnesses that plague our nation and, increasingly, the world. The obesity rates in westernized countries are steadily climbing, but the United States still tops the list with a whopping 40 percent of the population falling into the obese category. That means more than 130 million Americans are walking around with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
Translation? America is fatreally fat.
I wish that having excess adipose tissue and the not fitting into our clothes from high school were the most significant issues we face. Our greater concern is that Americans weight problem correlates with an alarming rise in autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other life-threatening conditions.
Right now, you may be suffering from one or more of these ailments. You may also be overweight or obese. Even if youre not overweight, you may feel poorly, and youre ready to feel better. Youd like to go an entire workday without feeling the need to lie down next to your desk and take a nap. You no longer want to carry the burden of sleepless nights, mood swings, and lagging energy.
The good news is this: No matter what situation brought you here today, its not too late. I want to help you achieve your goals. I also want you to know that your current situation is not your fault. For years, weve all gone to our doctors for help and left with more problems than we started with. The medical solutions seem to be making us sicker and fatter.
The reality is finally sinking in that the professionals to whom were supposed to entrust our lives can no longer be trusted. Yes, Im generalizing. Some physicians are trustworthy, but a growing number of people are doubtful that most traditional medical professionals have their patients best interests at heart.
When you hire a lawyer, you expect to win your case. When you hire a mechanic, you assume that person will fix your car. When you hire a plumber, you expect your toilet to leak no more. But the expectation often isnt the same with doctors. When you visit a doctor, you often expect to leave the visit with a prescription to address some of the symptoms youre experiencing, but you dont necessarily think youll be cured forever. Can you imagine your mechanic telling you the answer to fixing your cars broken suspension and failing transmission is to put some expensive chemical additives into the fuel tank? Youd laugh, leave his shop, and never look back.
The human body is way more complicated than a car engine, and to address problems, we need to look at how the body works as a whole rather than how each system functions. Thats precisely why we can no longer look to traditional medical doctors. They dont treat the human body with the holistic, comprehensive approach needed to address health problems at the root.
Doctors are trained to treat what they see. Symptoms equal diagnoses. Diagnoses equal Band-Aid treatments. Band-Aid treatments lead to more symptoms. And the cycle repeats.
However, it can be different. The cycle can end now. In this book, I show you how you can reclaim your body and your life. The information I provide will help you reach your best weight, overcome chronic illness, and stop the cycle of prescription medication that keeps you trapped in a flawed and failing system.
A Lifestyle or a Fad?
You may be suspicious of the word keto, which is short for ketogenic, because its a buzzword. Its plastered all over our social media feeds. For the past several years, its been the fastest-growing search term in the health and wellness space. The odds are that you have a friend or family member who has gone keto.
Is keto a fad? The modern-day Atkins Diet? A quick fix for rapid weight loss? You can call keto a diet, but weight loss isnt the real point of keto, although you may lose weight as you revamp what you do to fit within the ketogenic way of living. Keto isnt a fad, either. Keto is a lifestyle that gives your body the fuel on which it was designed to thrive. The principles of keto are based on science, and in this book, I share the facts that will empower you with life-changing information.
One of the most significant driving factors for the rise in the incidence of chronic disease and insulin resistance is the overconsumption of the wrong types of foods. The diet youve followed for most of your life is known as the standard American diet (aptly nicknamed the SAD). The SAD is heavy on sugar, carbs, and unhealthy fats while being light on real nutrition. The result is systemic inflammation and oxidative stress that adversely affect your body at a cellular level.
The ketogenic diet holds incredible promise as a foundational nutritional approach to reducing inflammation, improving fat-burning, and enhancing mental function. An abundance of research and case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of a well-formulated, high-fat diet. The keto diet creates a metabolic shift that helps you become better equipped to burn your stored body fat, transforming you from being a sugar burner to being a fat burner.
