O ne thing that I have found myself struggling with over the years is a lack of energy. I know part of the reason why I was having so many problems with my energy levels is because of the excess weight I was carrying around. The other problem I had was with how I viewed myself and lets just say it was never in a very positive light. I knew I had to do something, I knew in my heart I needed to make some kind of lifestyle change and honestly I knew I had to do it sooner rather than later.

The problem was knowing I had to make a lifestyle change and actually making the change. I had no idea where to start, but I knew I had to start somewhere so I began talking to family and friends. I talked to a lot of people, all of whom had lots of good advice, but the one thing that stuck out for me was the ketogenic diet.

I knew making a lifestyle change would involve changing my eating habits, I knew I would have to leave out certain foods. The problem was most diets when I looked into them involved eating boring, tasteless foods. Then I heard about the ketogenic diet and how I could eat bacon, ground beef, steak, cheese, and all the other fatty foods that I knew and loved and I was hooked. I decided to give the diet a chance and it worked so well for me, that I knew I had to share it with others.

One thing that you need to be aware of is that the ketogenic diet is a highly controversial diet, much like the Atkinss diet. The reason why it is so controversial is because of all the misconceptions surrounding it. We will talk about the misconceptions in a little bit, but for now lets take a look at what the diet is and why it is so good for you.

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat diet that is designed to put your body into a state of ketosis. For those of you who are new to this diet ketosis is a metabolic state that allows your body to use ketones for energy rather glucose. In this state your body is burning fat for energy rather than carbohydrates, which means your body, will either be burning stored body fat for energy or the fat that you are consuming as part of your daily diet.

One of the greatest things about the ketogenic diet is that it has numerous health benefits. In the beginning researchers created the diet to help reduce the number of seizures in people who suffered from epilepsy. The created the diet as a way to trick the body into thinking it was fasting, as fasting had been shown to lower the number of seizures patient experiences in a day. As researchers developed the diet they also found it helped in the fight against cancer and Alzheimers and as an added bonus it helped with weight loss. People who have started following a ketogenic diet have discovered that it is probably the best diet to follow if you are looking for rapid weight.

If you are considering the ketogenic diet it is important that you talk with your doctor beforehand to ensure it is safe for you to follow. As a ketogenic diet is considered to be an extreme diet and care should be taken when following it. Many people suggest following the diet for a specific period of time and then going off it for a period, but that will be up to you and your health care provider to decide. The ketogenic diet if not implemented correctly can create long-term health problems if followed for an extended period of time because the lack of carbs is putting extra stress on your liver.

As I mentioned earlier one of the biggest problems with the ketogenic diet is the misconceptions that surround the diet. Many people are afraid to try the diet because they have heard nothing but horrible things about it, all of which are the misconceptions surrounding the diet. To give you a better understanding of this diet lets take a quick look at the top 10 misconceptions in regards to the ketogenic diet.

  1. Carbs are necessary for your health. Your brain only needs carbs if it doesnt have ketones as an alternative fuel.
  2. Your body is in danger of a vitamin deficiency. If the diet is followed correctly and you use the correct supplements there is nothing to worry about.
  3. Ketogenic diet causes you to go into ketosis, which is dangerous. People who say this are confused with ketoacidosis, which is dangerous.
  4. As a high protein diet your kidney will suffer damage. Ketogenic diets are not high protein diets; they are high fat diets, so your kidneys should suffer no serious side effects.
  5. Your body will excrete calcium which can lead to osteoporosis because of the high protein requirements. As mentioned in number four a ketogenic diet is a high fat diet not a high protein diet. If bone loss does occur it is the result of something else.
  6. The diet will clog your arteries and cause heart disease because it is a high-fat diet. Low carb diets have actually been proven to help improve heart disease markers more than any other type of diet.
