Gay men reveal their preferenceand the reasons behind it!
Gay Men and Anal Eroticism: Tops, Bottoms, and Versatiles is a no-holds-barred examination of one of societys most persistent taboos. In a remarkably candid collection of frank and forthright interviews, 21 gay men talk about the role anal sex plays in their lives and relationships and their choices to act as insertive (top) or receptive (bottom) partnersor both (versatile). Ranging in age from 21 to 65, the men discuss the reasons behind (and consequences of) their choices; how they define their sexual roles (and how those roles are defined by gay society); issues of power, trust, and vulnerability; and the concept (in both straight and gay society) that tops and bottoms are socially and morally unequal.
These unique interviews, conducted by the author in the Boston and Provincetown areas, celebrate choice in gay mens sexuality while debating whether preference is genetically based or socially formeda debate largely ignored in social science studies. The men interviewedincluding gay porn icon Cole Tuckerdiscuss perceptions muddied by stereotypes, preconceived notions, and exaggerated scenarios, and the meanings gay men assign to anal sex, including dominance and submission roles related to masculine/feminine, aggressive/passive implications. The interviews also cover each subjects personal history as a gay man, safe sex in the AIDS era, childhood traumas, first-time sexual encounters, loves, desires, and obsessions.
The interviews for Gay Men and Anal Eroticism provide insights that are equal parts thoughtful and outrageous, humorous and heartbreaking:

  • Aaron, age 24: I sort of fell into this image of myself as being a very aggressive bottom, a guy who knew what he wanted and who didnt want any wimps applying.
  • Danny, 21: Theres a mindset about being a top its kinda like maintaining the ship.
  • Sam, 36: I hate to say it, but Im a bottom I dont like to be identified like that because I feel it turns me into something all the way from my feet up to my head.
  • Eddie, 42: I guess I enjoy more being a top than a bottom because I havent found a good top.
  • and Cole Tucker: A physical act doesnt really make you a top or a bottom. Its a function, an organic function of what you do. Its the dynamics of where you come from.

The revealing disclosures of Gay Men and Anal Eroticism show equality in man-to-man sex to be as varied as the number of individuals who pursue it. Addressing traditional misunderstandings and misconceptions of gay men as either limp-wrested fairies or masculine trade, the book uncovers that there is much more to this complex issue than personal preference.

Introduction Is It a Natural Thing I was twenty-one years old when I came out - photo 2
Introduction: Is It a Natural Thing?
I was twenty-one years old when I came out to my parents. The following night my father, who seemed to have taken the news surprisingly well, came home late and dead drunk. Reeking of alcohol and cigarettes, he staggered up to me and blurted out the most appalling question imaginable: So, do you take it up the ass? Is that what you faggots do?
I stood there baffled and unable to utter a single word in my defense. If I'd said no, he'd have known it was a lie. And if I'd said yes?... Well, that was unthinkable. A moment later, his eyes bulging with rage, he was advancing toward me with the sharpest kitchen knife in the house.
I honestly don't remember how I got myself out of that mess. Either I got lucky or I did something brilliant to save my ass. I remember lying awake most of the night and getting up early the next morning to catch a bus out of town. Distance and time settled things down and my father and I eventually became better friends. He left me with a slew of memories to contend with when he died of lung cancer a couple of years ago. The memory of that night is the one that haunts me the most.
Like many other gay men, I avoided talking or even thinking about anal sex most of my life. I engaged in it occasionally but always felt that there was something shameful and embarrassing about it. As an adolescent I pitied men who got fucked as I speculated that their real desire was to be women.
I started experimenting with a boy in the neighborhood when I reached puberty. After we'd done the usual feeling each other up, licking and jacking each other's cocks, we decided it was time to see what fucking would feel like. We made a peculiar deal. One of us would lie face down on the bed, allowing the other to mount him; the bottom boy would be under no obligation to comply or to facilitate penetration. In fact, he was expected to squeeze his butt as hard as possible to resist it. He'd also keep an eye on his watch to make sure that the fucker got his business done in under two minutes. I was the first one to top. There was no lube involved and try as I might, I couldn't even begin to invade that tight butt hole of his. Soon my time was up; I relinquished and handed him the reins. Smart boy that he was, he got off the bed, marched to the bathroom, and lathered his cock with soap. He returned and aimed at my virgin hole while I tried, as best I could, to conceal how aroused I truly was. He started to push, not gently, and a moment later I was in the throes of the most intense pain I'd ever experienced in my twelve years. I pushed him off of me and, as one of the guys interviewed for this book says about his own first anal sex experience, that was that. I wouldn't let a dick get that close to my asshole again for eight years.
Thankfully, gay men don't abide by the general (and boring) heterosexual assumption that sex is not sex unless it involves some form of genital fucking. We take pride in our sexual creativity. Sucking, licking, frottage, and mutual masturbationa mere fraction of the rich repertoire gay men habitually indulge inhave been the highlights of many a sexual encounter in my life. Although butt-fucking is not as commonly practiced as sucking or jacking off, it's still very popular. Roughly three-fourths of gay men have anal sex at one time or another in their lives, with an equal percentage participating as tops and bottoms. This, in spite of the fact that anal sexuality is one of the most persistent social taboos we must contend with every day.
