Introduction

A re you a food addict ? If you go on the defense, do not worry, you are not alone. And in fact, addiction can run from extreme to minimal. An addict can only do drugs once a week, but they are still an addict. Food addiction can be less addictive than other substances, but the process is the same.

People come in all different shapes and sizes, just like food addiction. This affliction is not only for the overweight. In fact, food addiction can affect even those who are underweight. This happens because some people have the ability to only eat junk food, highly addictive food, and still stay thin.

Throughout this book, you will learn how to treat all manners of food addiction. You will see how your brain is overriding your willpower when it is craving something, how your body sends messages about nutrients it needs, and how your environment impacts your ability to choose healthy over addiction. All of these factors make it challenging to be healthy and stop overeating, but it is possible, and as you dive into this book, you will learn techniques and guides on how you can do it in your everyday life.

Below are some characteristics of food addicts. Next to each statement, say yes or no.

  1. You are aware that your portion sizes are large during meals, but you do not feel satisfied when you have smaller amounts.
  2. Even post-meal, you reach for a snack.
  3. You tell yourself you will have one or two cookies from a new package, but after you open it, you cannot stop and eat the whole bag or most of it.
  4. You spend an inordinate amount of time pondering food.
  5. You feel hungry often.
  6. You eat fast and cannot slow down your pace.
  7. Many times after you eat, you feel bad. Typically you experience discomforts like nausea, bloating or fatigue.
  8. You seldom or never feel true hunger.
  9. The concept of true hunger unsettles you.
  10. Sometimes you do not realize you are eating until you are almost done.
  11. It is rare for you to eat the expected five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
  12. Diets are hard to stick to. If you do stick to it and lose weight, you quickly gain it back.
  13. Every now and then you crave an odd food that you normally do not and will binge on it. Later you feel guilt or shame for doing so.
  14. You promise yourself that you are not going to give in to a craving or overeat or another food-related goal but often break those promises.
  15. You recognize that you are not eating enough healthy foods, but do not like the taste or texture of healthy options like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  16. Your weight determines your mood. When you have unwanted weight you are unhappy, and sometimes even when you are on the average weight, you are still unhappy.

Just because you said yes to one or more of these statements does not mean you are a food addict, and it is possible that everyone and some have said yes to at least one of these characteristics. This is a good time to remind you that food addiction comes in a spectrum. A precise definition or "line in the sand" can never be drawn to show addiction versus a moment of desire. It is unlikely there ever will be. But just because it is hard to determine addiction does not mean it does not exist. Even if you only said yes to one of the problems above, and it is an ongoing problem you seem to struggle with, you can learn more about why you do what you do now. Instead of thinking you have the weak willpower or a lack of motivation; you can address your behaviors from the perspective of addiction and finally make a breakthrough in your habits and goals.
