Introduction

A lcoholism is an extreme dependency on consuming alcohol in order to be able to function in society. It also refers to the illnesses of the mind and the extreme behavioral compulsions that are a direct effect of drinking to excess. Alcoholism is a continuous excessive disease that is identifiable by compulsively drinking alcoholic beverages to excess. This practice leads to physical and psychological addiction or dependence. People who are alcoholics are unable to control their drinking. They have no real control over the need to drink often and excessively. This tendency often displays as an inability to go to work regularly or to perform properly when at work. Alcoholics will either socialize way too much or will be unable to socialize with others. Many alcoholics prefer to drink alone, not only because it is quieter and they can focus on the drink but also so there are no other people to judge how much they drink.

Alcoholics are often characterized by their slovenly appearance. When alcoholism takes over most people eventually stop bathing regularly and no longer care about their personal appearance. They do not cut or wash their hair. They do not change clothes regularly, and their clothing is often food-stained and reeking of human body odor. Some alcoholics display violent tendencies. The most mild-mannered person in the world can become a vicious beast or a raving lunatic when the alcohol takes over their senses.

People who are alcoholics are susceptible to certain diseases that do not regularly affect the general public. Alcoholics have an increased risk of developing hepatitis, an inflammation of the tissue in the liver. They are also most likely to suffer from cirrhosis of the liver, which is scarring of the tissue due to the effects of other illnesses that affect the liver. Alcoholics also have an increased risk of developing alcohol poisoning due to the fact that alcoholic beverages are consumed rapidly in a short amount of time.

Alcoholism knows no boundaries. Anyone, anywhere, at any time, can become an alcoholic. It knows no age limit, nor does it prefer one gender over another. Alcoholism does not care if you are rich or you are poor. Alcoholism has been a public health crisis for many generations. This is an amazing fact considering that only about half the people in the world consume all of the alcohol. There are many countries in the world where almost no one drinks any form of alcohol due to religious reasons.

Part of the problem, and part of the reason that alcoholism can so easily become a problem is that alcohol is everywhere. In most towns and cities it is impossible to drive down the street without passing a liquor store, a bar, or a club. Many large cities even advertise their more popular bars. Alcohol can be found at many activities, and many activities grew up around the consumption of alcohol. Consider the college campus and happy hour at the bar. Think of the Friday night mixers and the BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) reminder where the host or hostess supplied various mixers. And there are always the holiday gatherings, where even multi-generational families will toast the New Year with a glass of champagne.
