Every year, chronic diseases claim the lives of more than 1.7 million Americans. Yet many of these deaths can be prevented. The major chronic disease killersheart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetesare often directly related to how individuals behave in their daily lives. In other words, you can do plenty to prevent them from shortening your life. But first, you need to know something about them.
Cardiovascular diseases are the nation's leading killers. Diseases of the heart and blood vessels claim nearly 1 million lives annually. Approximately one-third of those people die prematurelyyounger than their average life expectancy. Among the most common cardiovascular diseases are coronary artery disease, the leading cause of death; stroke, the third leading cause of death; and hypertension (high blood pressure), which contributes to death from both heart attack and stroke.
Coronary artery disease and most strokes are largely the result of atherosclerosis, a buildup of fat, cholesterol, and other substances on the inside of artery walls. As the walls become lined with layers of these deposits, known as plaque, the arteries narrow, reducing the flow of bloodand oxygento the body. When atherosclerosis affects the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart, the resulting

Eat a healthy diet. Eat a low-fat, high-fiber diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables. Studies consistently link a diet high in fruits and vegetables to a lower risk of cancer.
Get screened. Regular screening for cancers of the breast, colon, and prostate can reduce mortality. Screening recommendations appear on page 13.
Consider genetic testing. If breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer runs in your family, you may wish to consider genetic testing.
Moderate your alcohol consumption. Compared with teetotalers, women who regularly have one drink a day raise their breast cancer risk by 11 percent. Those who regularly have more than two raise their risk by 40 percent. Alcohol also contributes to oral and esophageal cancers.
Consider postmenopausal use of estrogen. When data gathered from 59,002 postmenopausal participants in the Nurses' Health Study were analyzed, it was found that the risk of colorectal cancer was lower among women receiving hormone replacement therapy. But some studies indicate that HRT may increase the risk of breast cancer.
Consider the benefits of drug therapy. Women at high risk of developing breast cancer may wish to consider taking tamoxifen. A recent study of 13,000 high-risk women found that those who used the drug, which is used to treat breast cancer, had a 45 percent reduced incidence of breast cancer. Tamoxifen did raise the risk of endometrial cancer, however. Another drug, raloxifene (Evista), which is used to reduce bone loss, has also shown protective benefits. When 7,705 women were studied, those taking raloxifene had a rate of breast cancer 66 percent lower than those taking a placebo (an inactive substance). They also had a 50 percent lower risk of endometrial cancer.

Both the incidence of and the number of deaths from COPD are increasing. An estimated 16 million Americans suffered from COPD in 1995, and mortality with severe COPD may be as high as 60 percent at

In another study, conducted at the Stanford University School of Medicine, people with advanced-stage cancer who attended group therapy doubled clinical expectations for the time left before their cancer-related deaths.
Those who do something for others are also healthier. In a study of people who helped out the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, those who volunteered weekly were 10 times more likely to report good health.

Identify with Being Well.
Studies across a wide range of illnesses show that patients who expect to get well often do so, regardless of treatment. This phenomenon is known as the placebo effect. The mind takes over to promote healing. Herbert Benson, M.D., president of the Mind/Body Medical Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, has another name for this phenomenon: remembered wellness. According to Benson, positive beliefs activate certain patterns in the brain that are associated with wellness.
In one study, for example, patients with physical complaints but no identifiable diseases were told either that no serious diseases had been found and that they soon would be well or that the causes of their ailments were unclear. Two weeks later, 64 percent of the first group had recovered compared with only 39 percent of the second. So whenever you are ill, let your mind focus on healthiness and you'll be more likely to recover and live longer.
Exercise Your Mind.
As you get older, certain mental functioning skills decline, especially after age 80. Spacial orientation and inductive reasoningin which

On the other hand, vocabulary and math skills actually improve with age, and reasoning ability stays the same, the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging reports.

Seek stimulating companionship. The reasoning abilities of spouses become more similar over time, according to Nutrition Action Newsletter. Typically a lower-functioning spouse will move toward the higher-functioning spouse. If you don't have a mate or feel you are the higher-functioning person in the relationship, spend time with other family members or friends who are more stimulating.
