Foreword
JJ VIRGIN, NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR, THE VIRGIN DIET
L ike you, Im a busy woman juggling career and family, so I outsource some chores and responsibilities in order to focus on other things. But one thing I still do myself is grocery shop. I love wandering the aisles to see what new foods manufacturers impose on vulnerable consumers. Occasionally I am impressed, but far more often Im dismayed at the fortified Frankenfoods and otherwise bizarre concoctions that pass for sustenance these days.
I can understand why people feel so confused about what they eat. Whole grain bread, which manufacturers tout as healthy, often contains high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Vitamin-fortified muffins, fiber-enriched cookies, and agave-sweetened soy ice cream create a halo effect, making you think that youre eating something healthy, when in reality you are eating junk food in disguise. And dont get me started about gluten-free cupcakes!
I often lament how far weve gotten from eating real food. So when Esther Blum told me about her back-to-basics approach in Cavewomen Dont Get Fat , I felt relieved to finally have a smart, savvy plan that simplifies the what-to-eat hype and hoopla.
Esthers Paleo Chic philosophy focuses on whole, unprocessed foods. This is the stuff that your great, great, great, great-grandparents thrived on and your ancestors (Im talking thousands of years ago) flourished on to stay trim, muscular, and healthy. After all, you had to be pretty lithe and lean in the cavewomen era, or you could end up a saber-toothed tigers lunch!
When you eat foods that are lean and clean, theres little need to scrutinize labels or decipher ingredients. You know that no gluten (a protein found in wheat and other grains) slipped into your organic broccoli and that your wild-caught salmon isnt injected with unpronounceable preservatives.
Esther uses her impressive scientific knowledge and training, coupled with years of experience counseling women on living gorgeously in Manhattans concrete jungle, to bust some egregious modern dietary myths.
Hands up, for instance, if youve ever foolishly and drastically cut your calories to look like the latest skinny magazine cover model, who actually happens to be TOFI (thin on the outside, fat on the inside), but you ended up hungrier, grouchier, and flabbier after six weeks of starving yourself.
Esther shows you a smarter, healthier path toward burning fat, feeling your best, and turning back the clock that doesnt involve counting calories or any other calculations that take the fun out of eating.
What makes Cavewomen Dont Get Fat unique is that Esther goes beyond doling out diet advice to deliver cutting-edge tips that help you stay fit and fabulous, balance hormones, and detoxify effectively. For instance, she debunks and explains why those store-bought tabloid-celebrity cleanses often do more harm than good.
Exercise is a vital part of the cavewoman protocol, but you probably dont have time for spin classes and elliptical machines amid your ever-growing to-do list. Thankfully, Esther shows you how to get that lean, mean cavewoman physique without spending hours in the gym.
Reduce stress? Get optimal shut-eye? Count me in. Esthers got smart strategies for that too.
Lest I make her sound overly serious and studious, Esther is not all work and no play. Shes my favorite party girl nutritionist who can make science fun and sexy ( not an easy thing to do!), and she shows you how to have a good time and keep your dietary dignity with no lingering regrets. Theres even a section all about the power of chocolate. Enough said!
Reading Esthers book is like hanging with a supersavvy, whip-smart girlfriend over cocktailsokay, Pinot Noiras she dishes and dispels dietary myths, and provides an easy-to-implement path to staying lean and sexy for life. Just like a fabulous brunch with my best girlfriends, I didnt want Cavewomen Dont Get Fat to end.
Introduction
F or most of my life, Ive hated the word diet . Im not a fan of the word for many reasons, but mostly because no diet has ever worked for me. Ive just never figured out how to reconcile eating diet foods with living a happy and balanced life.
Does this sound familiar?
Most women I work with feel the same way: when we hear the word diet , we quickly duck into a hidden place of shame, where we secretly know well faildespite our best efforts. Thats because most diets try to force us into a kind of submission Eat this! Avoid that! that undermines everything we know to be true about being confident, healthy, independent women.
For me, like many of you, theres nothing worse than putting all of our past failures aside and making a commitment to this or that diet, only to find that, after initially losing weight (and usually suffering in the process), the pounds that we diligently shed (usually due to a degree of willpower that is unsustainable) find their way back to us. Oh, and Im sure you noticed that those lost-and-gained pounds usually bring a few new pounds home with them.
Its high time we throw up our hands and admit that trying to lose weight the traditional way just doesnt work. But what then? Should we just resign ourselves to the fact that we may be carrying around five, ten, twenty, or more pounds that keep us from feeling as sexy and healthy as we deserve to feel? Do we settle for mercurial mood swings, constant food cravings, terrible PMS or scorching hot flashes, foggy brains, and low energy? Or do we toss the notion of dieting out the window and decide that were just going to simplify our lives and finally get back to eating the way we were always designed to do?
It really is that easy. All we need to do is look to our ancestors for the answers. And no, Im not talking from the time of your great-great-grandma. Im talking about going way back. Back to the time before smart phones, cars, electricityeven farming. It all begins and ends for us women, nutritionwise and healthwise, back in Paleolithic times.
I discovered that if I follow a diet similar to the one that my long-ago Paleolithic sisters ate, I can be lean, strong, sexy, and healthy. Forever. And you can be too.
