Chapter One: Introducing A Long Petal of the Sea
A long Petal of the Sea is a 2020 fiction novel written byIsabel Allende.
It is a historical fictionabout exile, hope, and belonging. The story begins in the late1930s at the time Spain was gripped by the civil war. Thousands ofpeople were forced to depart when Franco Francisco, the General, and his fascists succeeded in destroying the government. Peopleneeded to leave on a dangerous journey over the mountains towardsthe French border. One of the refugees was a young pianist fromSante Fe de Segarra named Roser Bruguera, who was pregnant with herfirst child but already widowed. Roser's life intertwined with herdead husband's brother, Victor Dalmau.
Though neither of them likesit, Victor, who is an army doctor, offers Roser marriage for thetwo of them to survive. Through Roser and Victor'spartnership, their safety is secured, as they also kept within themthe legacy of the man that they both loved. Along with the twothousand other Spanish refugees, Roser and Victor embark on adesperate journey to Chile onboard the S.S. Winnipeg, a rescue shipchartered by the Poet Pablo Neruda. They both suffered being exiledwhen the other places in Europe joined the fight in the world war. However, when they started their new lives together in a newcountry, Roser and Victor find themselves being caught in aconflict between the old and the new culture. They thought thatthey have escaped but later on, realized that their trials werejust the beginning.
They faced trials after trials but still findsjoy because of the hopes in their heart. They were patient enoughto wait for the day to come that they will not become exilesanymore. Their determination to return to their home country,Spain, keeps them moving forward. Roser and Victor were destined towitness the clash between repression and freedom, which washappening across the world. In the end, they found out that theirreal home might actually just be closer than they thought allalong. One good thing about thebook would be the author's kindness with all of her characters, even if they did some horrible or stupid things.
Allende stillkindly described Victor after she narrated his affair. Victor, inthe book, had an affair with Ofelia, a 21- year-old girl who has avery conservative family. It was said that Victor got Ofeliapregnant even though he was aware of a violent reaction that couldnot be avoided by Ofelia's family. Allende did not give any commentabout that scene in the book. She did not even provide any judgmentwhen she put her character, Victor, in a situation where he neededto be put into prison. Allende perhaps just consider misery andbitterness as something that should be denounced.
She is just likeher female protagonist, Roser, who said that pain is always around, but suffering will always depend on a person's choice. Allende's research aboutthe book was actually praised and commended by many readers. Thenovel seemed to be creative nonfiction prose rather than a fictionstory. The part where Pablo Neruda was mentioned was actually real.Neruda, indeed, chartered S.S. Winnipeg, the ship that was alsocited in the book, to rescue about 2200 Spanish refugees. There wasalso a coup d'etat, which was supported by America in 1973.
It wasagainst President Salvador Allende, Chile's first democraticallyelected President, who happens to be the author's godfather too.Victor, on the other hand, was a real doctor in Spain, who reallydid flee outside his country when the war occurred. Repression ofcivil freedom, torture of political prisoners, kidnappings, andsudden disappearances that was told in the story of Roser andVictor, also took place in the real history of theworld. The book highlightsAllende's writing very well. She was able to readers on an intimatejourney amid a troubled world. The story of Roser and Victor tellsus that people need to recognize and accept their surroundingsfirst. Everyone should also understand the other people that theycame to meet and believe in their own selves to survive.
Roser andVictor's story started with the flight from Spain, then becomingprisoners and later was considered as refugees before they becameimmigrants. They navigated through the hardships together, as wellas, their relationship and the country that they finally calledhome. The book is bothencouraging yet dominating. It was written in a skillfullyattractive manner with the topic about the difficulty of letting goof one culture into accepting a new one. The novel realisticallyshowed that one's story is not, after all, the wholestory. Discussion Prompt1: A long Petal of the Sea is a 2020fiction novel written by Isabel Allende.
