Foreword
It is widely recognized that developing and managing culture is a core competence for successful businesses. Thats why Im a big fan of this book and have a deep interest in company culture and the work that Brett is doing.
I believe that we are on the cusp of a new era. An era in which businesses acting in their own self-interest deliver society from what many now describe as The Meaning Crisis. Whether we enter that era is up to us. To seize the opportunity will be challenging, but if we are successful, the reward will be substantial.
The Meaning Crisis is a term coined by John Vervaeke, a Professor of Psychology and Philosophy at Toronto University, to explain that many of societys problems stem from the fact that over the last thousand years or so, meaning has been slowly stripped from our lives. We feel less connected to our families and institutions, which is the root cause of a range of ills, from the mental health crisis to widespread dissatisfaction at work and with our political leaders. Most of all, we can see the meaning crisis in the results of survey after survey, which show that despite the fact we are wealthier, healthier and safer than ever before, we are no happier. We also know that when people report feeling meaning in their lives there is a strong correlation with feelings of happiness.
