So, lets break down exactly what Instagram is and how its relevant for todays small businesses. Instagram is a social media app owned by Facebook. It primarily focuses on visual mediums, i.e. photographs instead of plain text. Over 500 million Instagram accounts are active on a daily basis worldwide. Who are these users? For the most part, Instagram users tend to be young. 64% of users are between the ages of 18-34. On top of that, those under the age of 25 tend to spend upwards to an hour and a half using Instagram every day!
Instagram is also a highly global platform. 80% of its total userbase is located outside of the United States. But dont let that number fool you into thinking the U.S. has a small number of users. Its estimated that there are 105 million Instagram users in America alone! Its a busy platform with plenty of traffic.
In terms of gender demographics, more women use Instagram than men, however, when it comes to daily active users, they are fairly close together, with 50.3% of the userbase being female. The fact that there is little difference in gender makeup means the platform is essentially unisex, making it appropriate for any product regardless of gender demographic.
So, there are quite a bit of people who use Instagram regularly. The question then is, what type of content are they interested in? And does a small business have the ability to reach those users? As for content, it really goes across the board. Users enjoy following a wide variety of different types of accounts and generally move towards accounts that post related to their interests. After all, Instagram is a form of social media. This means that people will aggregate towards their chosen niches and look for a steady stream of content that is related to that niche.
On the business end, however, the numbers are quite impressive. There are currently over 8 million business accounts set up on Instagram. 80% of users follow at least one business account. And on top of that, 60% of Instagram users report that they first heard about a product or service on Instagram. 30% of users even make purchasing decisions based on Instagram posts that theyve come across featuring a product.
These numbers show that there is a big market of people who are readily engaging with the platform on a daily basis and are willing to engage with business accounts. Ad revenue is staggeringly high on Instagram, in fact, in 2018, they sold over 6.8 billion in ads. This means that advertisers have clearly seen value in using Instagram as a marketing tool and have put out quite a bit of money in order to get their ads in front of the relevant audience.
As you can see, Instagram is a big field, ripe for those who are looking to market their products and services. Lets move on to the first step, where we will learn how to create a customer persona to better help with targeted marketing.
