INTRODUCTION
Hurray! The new normal has come; it has come to stay! Okay, you must be wondering what I mean by the new normal. Well, the new normal here refers to the concept of blended learning.
Some of the problems encountered by the classroom traditional pedagogical approach to learning gave rise to the emergence of blended learning in our society today. Given my research and experience, I have realized that the classroom learning style has led to some pitfalls in delivering content effectively.
The problem of overdependence of students on their tutors has plagued the educational sector for as long as God knows when. Whether in the academic field, or employee training, students tend to find it difficult to develop problem-solving skill on their own. They always look up to their instructor for solutions to every problem. Simple tasks and problems become a mission impossible for them.
The greater danger here is that the mindset and morale of the learners begin to deplete continuously as the day goes by. They begin to fall short of their potentials, and of course, you can imagine the result of such, this is the reason why a way out was sought for. And as you can imagine, blended learning served as the answer to this prayer.
You will also agree with me that the cost of maintaining the regular classroom education model is on the high side. The costs of accommodation, transportation, manpower etc. are indeed overwhelming. Thus, another cry for help; many could no longer afford to attend classes all the time because of the logistics involved.
Differences in personalities also contributed to the flaws of this traditional system. The system didnt have an equal platform to accommodate everyone with varying personalities. For instance, an introvert may find it difficult to actively participate in classroom exercises, even though they have the intellectual strength to. Meanwhile, less intelligent extrovert may excel even better.
Also, in just a regular classroom learning experience, sometimes, some students would be defiant, rowdy, or distracting others. Some students are good at hijacking the lesson, thus causing the instructor to drift from the intended content. At other times, some students may get bored, unmotivated, inattentive, tardy, unprepared etc. If we must overcome these challenges, we must look and think outside of the box. But no need to worry your pretty head, I have done the job for you already. Thats the purpose of this book.
But on the flip side, the incoming of the blended learning technique provides a fair playground for every learner to thrive. For the introvert, he can now take his questions and exercise directly to the instructor online problem solved! Also, with blended, the general expenses on transportation and accommodation would drastically reduce. Now tell me what news can be better than this one?
So, back to why I called the blended learning strategy, the new normal . Now let me ask you a quick question, which kid spits out suits when given one? Well, your answer is as good as mine; none, right? If none, then it is in the same manner that no same person would reject a good chance.
The good news now is that the blended learning strategy is finally beginning to garner the attention it deserves. Finally, it can now thrive as it ought. It is more or less the moving train now; if you want to get to your learning destination successfully, then you have no choice but to join in now.
Blended learning simply talks about the addition of two learning styles. It talks about the perfect combination of a classroom learning style with online learning. By way of mathematical illustration via an equation, we would have it thus:
Illustration
CLL + OLL = BLL. Equation (1)
Where CLL = classroom learning
Where OLL = online learning
Where BLL = blended learning
Interpretation
From equation one above, we can see a clear expression of the merger that occurred between classroom learning approach and the online method to produce the blended learning style. In other words, when we combine the classroom learning approach with online learning style, we would produce a mix or say a blend of both that is what blended learning is all about.
The misconception a lot of people have is that blended learning is equal to online learning alone, this is wrong on all standards. Blended learning does not condemn classroom learning, no! It only seeks to complement its weaknesses with the strength of the online style, and vice versa.
