Welcome to Accurate Layer Selections Using Photoshops Selection Tools. As a graphic artist who enjoys drawing, I felt that it would be helpful to have a book explaining how to make your drawings portfolio ready and turn them into vector art. When I think about Photoshop, I sometimes focus too much on the digital photography aspect of the application or the fact that I can manipulate my photos using various filters to make them appear like drawings.

While these are all good skills to have, I also have hand-drawn sketches on paper. They may not be perfect, and they may have too many lines or smudges or were drawn on the wrong type of paper, but that doesnt mean that they cant be used in my portfolio or as preliminary drawings for a logo or an animation. This book focuses on using Photoshop tools beyond the eraser and paintbrush to clean up your artwork and sketches. The chapters look at a variety of Photoshops selection tools, including the marquee and crop tools.

Pre-Photoshop Tools for Drawing the Sketch and Importing Hardware

Before you open Photoshop, take a moment to consider what kind of hardware and software you might need to turn your sketches into a digital format. As an artist, some of these items may be very intuitive to you. Nevertheless, it is good to review them so that you achieve the desired results.

A Sketchbook
You may prefer a large or a small sketchbook depending on your style and what you like to draw. Refer to Figure .

Ideally, I recommend one with a ring coil at the top so that you can lay each page flat or cleanly tear it from the rings if you need a flatter surface while you are acquiring the digital scan, which I explain how to do shortly. Single sheets of paper and canvas are good as well. The paper should be a solid color, like white, gray, or black. White is ideal as it is easier to clean up in Photoshop.
