Whrend meines Studiums in den USA besuchte ich einen Kurs ber Kultur und Kommunikation. Als das Thema Small Talk zur Sprache kam, blinzelte die Professorin mir der einzigen Deutschen im Kurs zu und begann die Vorlesung: Es gibt Kulturen, in denen Small Talk unwichtig ist.
Doch im englischen Sprachraum ist er sehr wichtig! Auf Reisen, bei Geschftskontakten mit englischsprachigen Partnern, am Telefon oder beim Arbeitsessen sind ein paar Stze, die ein Gesprch einleiten oder abrunden, Gold wert: Small Talk beeinflusst den gesamten Gesprchsverlauf positiv, erleichtert Absprachen, fllt die Lcken, die entstehen, wenn das eigentliche Gesprch abgeschlossen ist, und baut Brcken zu anderen Themen und zur menschlichen Seite eines Geschftspartners. Small Talk ist das wichtigste Mittel, mit anderen unverbindlich ins Gesprch zu kommen und vor allem im Gesprch zu bleiben.

Was bedeutet Small Talk? Wofr ist er notwendig? Small Talk wird mit Geplauder bersetzt: Genau das ist immens wichtig, um erste Kontakte mit unbekannten Gesprchspartnern zu knpfen, um Gesprche einzuleiten und um den richtigen Ton im Umgang mit anderen zu treffen.
Der Mensch ist ein Herdentier: Er lebt und berlebt, weil er stndig mit anderen Menschen in Verbindung kommt und mit ihnen kommuniziert. Mimische und gestische Kommunikation spielen dabei zunchst die wichtigste Rolle. Danach folgt die Sprache, aber wichtiger als das, was gesagt wird, ist zunchst, dass etwas gesagt wird, und zwar etwas Nettes, etwas Einladendes, etwas Unverfngliches und durchaus inhaltlich Oberflchliches Small Talk eben. Auch wenn er im Deutschen oft negativ als Geschwtz beurteilt wird, erfllt der Small Talk die wichtige Funktion der harmlosen Kontaktaufnahme, ohne die jede Party, jedes informelle Treffen, jede ungeplante Begegnung in hilfloses Schweigen mndet.
Der Gru gehrt zu den ritualisierten Redewendungen, die eine Gesprchssituation herstellen. Das deutsche Gr Dich oder Gr Sie wird hierzulande hufig durch ein familires Hello! oder das Hi! aus dem amerikanischen Englisch ersetzt. Doch das Englische hat noch weitere Varianten: Good morning oder ganz lssig morning fr die Vormittage, good afternoon am Nachmittag und How do you do? (Wie geht es Ihnen?), oft verkrzt zu how d'you do, beim Vorstellen bis hin zum saloppen Hi everybody, what's new? (Tag allerseits, was gibt's Neues?).

In vielen Lndern ist es blich, sich zu Stehempfngen oder einem Umtrunk zu treffen, um Neuankmmlinge vorzustellen, um sich informell ber geschftliche Ereignisse zu informieren oder einfach um die so genannten weichen Faktoren des Geschftslebens zu pflegen. Entweder werden Sie formell zu diesen kleinen Stehempfngen eingeladen oder Sie werden nebenbei darber unterrichtet, dass eine derartige reception (Empfang) stattfindet. Natrlich wird damit von Ihnen erwartet, ebenfalls dort zu erscheinen. Bei Kongressen und Tagungen gehrt eine reception (hier: Stehempfang) zum cultural package (Kulturpaket).
