First Edition
In the years since I released Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead , Ive met tens of thousands of people from all walks of life whove felt stuck. They knew they needed to make changes in their lives to improve their health but just couldnt get over that one big hurdle: getting started. To them I say, Give me five days. Five days is doable. Its manageable. Its not forever. And the way you feel at the end of those five days is so different from the way you felt at the beginning that people tell me its nothing short of magic or a miracle.
Thanks to all of you whove had the courage to come to an event, reach out to me on social media, and raise your hand. You remind me why I started this journey in the first placebecause everyone needs a little push in the right directioneven if its from an Australian bloke youve never met.
This book is for you. After all, its just five days!

Acknowledgments
Writing a new book is truly a group effort; Im a great talker, but writing is an entirely different beast. My humble thanks to Jamie Webber, who transformed my thoughts, philosophies, and ramblings into a coherent whole, and to Christine Frietchen who smoothed out the rough edges with deft editing. Sarah Mawson was instrumental in forming the thesis of Juice It to Lose It , in addition to coming up with the title.
Warmest thanks to the entire Reboot team: Sophie Carrel, Alison Choate, Kurt Engfehr, Liana Felt, Christine Frietchen, Ameet Maturu, Sarah Mawson, Jamin Mendelsohn, Olaf Steel, Roma Taylor, Alex Tibbetts, Jennifer Vandertoorn, Jamie Webber, and Chris Zilo. Our Reboot nutritionists, Rachel Gargano, Claire Georgiou, Abigail Hueber, Rhaya Jordan, Stacy Kennedy, and Isabel Smith patiently coach those on our Guided Reboot Programs, as well as contribute their expertise to our website content.
Thanks as well to the Reboot with Joe Medical Advisory Board, Stacy Kennedy and Carrie Diulus, MD, who help me understand the science of nutrition, weight loss, and juicing.
Lastly, my thanks to Sarah Hammond and the team at Hodder & Stoughton, and the team at Greenleaf Book Group for their guidance and enthusiasm for Juice It to Lose It .

Stop Waiting, Start Losing
Have you ever thought about the words weight and wait together? If you put some thought to it, theres some significance there. There are millions of us all over the world who have a goal to lose weightthe problem is we wait for the perfect time to start.
Most of the people I speak to have a fear of getting started. I call it the waiting game. Its a period when you know that you need to make some changes in your life, but you keep putting it off, waiting for the right time. You think Im too busy today, so the diet starts tomorrow, but then tomorrow turns into the next day, and the next day turns into the next week, and then the next month, and so the cycle continues. Been there, done that.
Reading this book is the first step in the right direction. Follow me. I know the way.
First, a little personal background. I grew up as an Australian kid in the 1970s. It was a time when quick service and fast-food restaurants were just starting to spring up. Looking back, it was the beginning of connecting food to fun. I could go and get a burger, fries, a Coke, and an ice cream sundae, and it was all delivered to me by a man in a clown suit with a red nose. That connection, the one between the food made in these restaurants and my happiness, was made early. I use the word food lightly, because at the time thats what I thought it was. Now I know that it was basically any combination of sugar, fat, and salt specifically designed by scientists to hit my bliss point, and boy did my bliss point respond.
It felt like pathways were created between my taste buds and the pleasure center in my brain that stayed with me through my teenage years. I loved sugar. I wasnt allowed to completely indulge though, because like most teenagers, I lived under Mum and Dads ordersOur House, Our Ruleswhich meant limited amounts of soda and ice cream in the house.
When I moved out at the age of eighteen and decided to skip college and take a job at the Sydney Futures Exchange, the shackles were off and it became My House, My Rules. Now my refrigerator was filled with red and white: red Coca-Cola cans and white containers of ice cream (usually chocolate).
In my new job as a day trader, I was all about fast cash and a fast life filled with money, expensive hobbies, fancy toys, and more food and alcohol than you can imagine. But hey, I was only eighteen; the human body is an incredible organism that can handle a lifestyle like that when you are young. But it has to end sometime.
At twenty-four, I had a little wake-up call after making a fool of myself and blacking out at a birthday party. I knew I needed to change. I suppose Id call this my first attempt at a diet. My goal wasnt to lose weight, but I needed a break from the daily cheeseburgers and bottomless wine glasses. I needed to clean up my act. Since Im an all-in kind of bloke, I jumped head first into an eighteen-month hiatus from boozing, and I stuck to eating a mostly vegetarian diet. However, around the same time, my professional life boomed. I started my own company, and my fast-lane life got even faster. I was rolling in money and that little health stint went out of the window. My body shape started echoing the shape of my wallet. Both were getting fat.
