Chapter 1: How to Create a Positive Mindset and the General Rules of Small Talk
Meeting new people and creating a formal conversation may sometimes seem weird and unnecessary unless when meeting for official interactions. However, when developing a topic of conversation with new people, it is crucial, to begin with, to make small talk, which builds up a conversation. There are multiple topics one can select from, and then develop a meaningful discussion from other relevant topics after. Small talks have been defined as an informal type of conversation or dialogue that does not necessarily cover the functional or transactional topic. It is, therefore, termed as a social skill that enables individuals to communicate with others freely, including strangers.
The first phenomenon of small talk began in 1923 when Bronislaw Malinowski first studied small talks and described it as a social skill and a type of social communication. Other than acting as a form of conversation opener, small discussions can also be used as space fillers to avoid silence during conversations. Others use small talks as a way of limiting rejections associated with the end of a given topic. Some discussions have limited topics to cover; and as such, it requires the need to include small talks to promote conversations between different people, including family members, friends, workmates, and new people. Researchers have stated that small talks may primarily depend on the nature of the relationship between the two parties engaging in the conversation.
The patterns of conversation for small talks have been linked to chances when meeting strangers and establishing topics which are typically agreed by the other person. It may include a question or opinion, or statements which usually require a response. As a way of responding, the person, when considering politeness, provides a short and substantial answer. In this case, you may either engage further within the topic, or rather change the subject with immediate consideration for the next topic. Small talks are usually short and act as tools to maintain a conversation despite the lack of a meaningful discussion. A study suggests that with speech, and how women tend to be collaborative between themselves, they can thus engage in different small talks frequently, when compared to men, due to their involvement in conversations.
Common Small Talk Topics for a Friendlier Conversation
Making Introduction
Meeting new people, especially those whom you always admire, can be made by the use of small talks, which promotes the development of a significant conversation. That is, you can approach and introduce yourself to someone whom you have never had interactions before. During the introduction, you can add some a few details about how you first saw the individual, or what you do. For example, Hello Angel, we always have coffee at the same place and same time, but we have never spoken. I am [Your name].
General Topics
There are several small talk topics that you can choose from and engage in to develop a conversation. You can talk about the weather, sports, or recent stories in the news making headlines. Such universal topics are essential, especially for groups, as some may become unaware of the topic, but one or more may. However, some may not be fans of sports or watch the news, but you can try to make it general to meet their interests. Don't engage in topics too profoundly, making others feel excluded, but make it become more interactive.
Talk About the Day
This is one of the small talks you can use when you have no clear idea of which topic to start with and break the silence. Talking about the day may either be about your day or their day, depending on whichever you decide to choose from. Even those having bad days can build a conversation by making it brighter. However, ensure you avoid engaging in personal matters which may feel offensive or sometimes like an invasion of privacy. Make it enjoyable, mainly when the other person participates in the conversation freely.
Immediate Environment
Another excellent small talk can be created from immediately where you and your partner are through observing what is around. That is, you can quickly check around and comment on something you feel is exciting. Some may opt to complement their partners about how they look or anything nice, or something which they both share. This would indicate that you will not lack a reply as your partner will definitely understand what you are talking about. Everybody likes a good compliment, notably when redirected to how they look. For example, I love your dress today; it really pulls your outfit together.
