ING IS
Modeling at its best creates images that portray women in com-
mand of health and wealth, while utilizing all the beauty the world
has to offer. The magic of modeling lies in casting a spell; it begins
by applying your intelligence and imagination to the challenge
of How will I go out and conquer the world today? Glamorous
enchantments conjured up in the privacy of your bathroom or on
the gowomen waving a mascara wand over their eyelashes in
the rearview mirror on the way to work.
Magic happens all over the world, every day, with women using
fashion and beauty to enhance their control over a situation. Ive
experienced absolute heights of confidence-building at dressing-
room tables backstage as a makeup artist and hairdresser artfully
apply makeup to show me at my best. Designers have taught me
how to use clothes as armor that not only flatters my silhouette
but also helps me establish and defend my position in the world.
I love the feeling of holding the world in thrall when a full-blown
version of my dream self emerges. Modeling may indeed be
a form of magic, but Im about to make one of the biggest
myths about models go poof!: Effortless is bullshit. Dont. Ever.
Forget. That.
Modeling is hard work. For a model to make money and be suc-
cessful, shed better work out like a pro athlete and eat like a heart
surgeon. The dark side of the industry is loneliness and physical
deprivation. I admit I was hungry for the better part of twenty
years to maintain the industrys ideal on-camera and runway
weight. Theres a lot of suffering involved in being a successful
model. Never turn down a great job unless its a matter of life or
deathor if you cant show up and be at your best. I missed huge
chunks of my familys lifefamily time Ill never get backliving
in New York and Paris while they were all in Detroit.
Time and modeling are not friends; careers are short, typically
three to five years at best. Most do not make a lot of money model-
ing. There are a number of expenses involved in creating a career
as a model: maintaining an apartment in a major fashion city like
Paris, New York, Milan, or Los Angeles; flying to follow the work
in those fashion capitals; accountants, lawyers (never sign any-
thing without a lawyer looking it over), beauty treatments, gyms,
and personal trainers. Plus the cost of the wardrobe it takes to
be presentable at castings. All that adds up to nearly one year
of college tuition, most of which comes out of the models own
pocket until shes made enough to cover expenses. If a model is
fortunate enough to become a favorite among magazines and the
few designers that have big budgets, these expenses are covered,
but only while the model is at the top. Whats a models largest
expenditure? Agency fees. The modeling agency standard is to
take 20 percent from the model and another 20 percent from the
clientwhich is 40 percent of the income a model generates.
Modeling is not easy but its exciting Access to the worlds most beautiful - photo 12
Modeling is not easy, but its exciting. Access to the worlds most
beautiful cities, best restaurants, and cultural events were some
of the jobs greatest perks. I flourished under the wings of great
designers. Azzedine Alaa, who personally fought for me to get
my first magazine covers and made the most exquisite clothes in
the history of fashion. Karl Lagerfeld, who championed me as a
muse and model on the runways of Chanel and introduced me
to European royalty, letting me know I belonged anywhere in
the world I might choose to go. Isaac Mizrahi, the fearless boy
genius of fashion, whose wit and whimsy in his masterful collec-
tions expanded the boundaries of what a designer could be. Our
friendship gave me the courage to branch out into my career as
a writer. Isaac also, always, no matter what, LOVED MY HAIR.
Thank you, Isaac, for always featuring black womens beauty.
Ive seen modeling as magical since I was a little girl staring at
women I idolized and dreamed of working with one dayall of
whom are women you will meet in the pages of this book.
Supreme
Models
celebrates the power of black women models not only to
inspire and transform attitudes of personal beauty, but also to
educate the world about the beauty of our hair, our lips, our hips,
and all the glorious shades of black womens skin, from alabaster
to onyx. With this, modeling is also powerful.
What means the most to me about my career? I have black, brown,
Latin, and Asian women approach me all over the world and say,
When I saw you on the cover of
Elle,
I knew I was beautiful,
too. There are times when these stories move me to tears. I had
a chance encounter in line at the grocery store with a woman who
recognized me from modeling. Her skin was a beautiful shade of
mahogany. She had a crown of coarse, curly hair, broad features,
and an uneasy smile. She shared this story with me: My parents
