INTRODUCTION
Minecraft is, in short, a sandbox for players to make anything they feel like creating come to fruition. While it lacks a lot of the features of most popular games, it makes up for this considerably with its unique focus on creativity--this, balanced with elements of action and survival horror, is more than enough to keep its devoted fanbase hooked, and for good reason.
This book is tailored to provide you with some ideas to utilize and improve your creations with Redstone as well as inform you about the plethora of things that can be derived from it! Please understand that, while this is meant to educate, this is not a detailed, step-by-step guide for each and every way Redstone can be used in Minecraft.
To keep the pacing of this book fast and and to the point, only those methods of using Redstone that are quick to do and detail will be extrapolated upon at any considerable length, as they often provide a baseline for what you may need for more complex applications.
For visual and video supplements for this material and so much more, you need look no further than YouTube or the Minecraft Wiki, where you can find in-depth information on the methods described herein from players and fans alike! Supplemental material is highly recommended, as a list does not always give an accurate idea of how much time or effort has to be put into a project (the Redstone Calculator, for instance, can take anywhere from 10 to 100 hours of gameplay to make).
Also note that the word Redstone will be used in place of Redstone Dust from here on.
CHAPTER 1: WHAT YOU NEED
Here is a brief listing of the essentials youll need for most of the schematics described in this book:
Basic Materials
-Redstone
-Redstone Block
-Redstone Repeater
-Redstone Torch
-Pressure Plate
-Piston
-Sticky Piston
-Lever
-Button
Advanced Materials
-Dispenser
-Dropper
-Hopper
-Redstone Comparator
Using Logic Circuits
These are functions critical to building projects efficiently, no matter the scale. For more information on logic circuits and how they can be applied to projects using Redstone and other materials, the Logic Circuit page on the Minecraft Wiki has a comprehensive overview on the subject.
These are the functions youll need to learn first and foremost, and that will give you a basic understanding of other logic circuits and related in-game functions:
-AND
-NAND
-OR
-XOR
-XNOR
-IMPLIES
Once you have a thorough understanding of the basics, not only will more complex concepts be easier, but you will be able to build all of the schematics listed herein more quickly and easily.
CHAPTER 2: REDSTONE SURVIVAL ESSENTIALS
If youre playing in survival mode, the schematics listed here are designed to help you not just survive--but thrive--in your game. These are basic schematics intended to get you acquainted with Redstone and its uses, and provide you the framework for more complex projects. These projects can take hours, but if youre already familiar with Redstone and how to use it, it can take mere minutes of crafting.
1. Redstone Lamp
These are very similar to Redstone torches, with the exception that these come with an on/off switch. To make sure the switch works properly, use Redstones to connect it to the lamp!
For a Redstone Lamp with automatic daylight sensors, you need only replace the lever with a daylight sensor and connect it to NOT gate, which will be described below.
2. Clock
This creation isnt all that great as a standalone item; however, the clock is a crucial piece to several other schematics using Redstone, especially those that are more advanced. The main function of the clock is to provide on/off cues, which is especially useful for projects requiring signals and on/off switches to function.
There are several different ways to build a clock, but the simplest way by far only takes 4 items:
-Block
-Redstone
-Redstone Repeater
-Redstone Torch
To build a clock, you must first set a block on the floor. Then, set a Redstone torch on one side. After that, with the Redstone repeater, link the torch to another side of the block. The signal speed on the clock will vary based on the delay settings on your repeater.
Do be careful, though: not using a delay setting at all on the Redstone repeater can and will burn out your torches and reactivate them at random, or when items are added to the circuit. Also know that clocks with no delay settings can slow down your game--and your computer--considerably.
3. Sliding Doors
The sliding doors are very easy to create. All you need are pressure plates, sticky pistons, Redstone, Redstone torches, Redstone repeaters, and your desired blocks (usually glass for this type of door).
