What is Crock-Pot
When talking about Crock Pots, we are actually talking about Slow Cookers.
Crock Pot is essentially a very well renowned brand that produces what are quite possibly the best Slow Cookers available in the market That being said, let me first clarify what Slow Cookers actually are. - For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, Slow Cookers or Crock Pots are countertop kitchen appliances that are designed to cook food at extremely low temperatures. This allows the appliances to facilitate hours of unattended cooking while producing an extremely delicious and hearty meal. Despite common belief though, Slow Cookers are extremely versatile in nature and you can create almost anything using the Slow Cooker, ranging from roasts, dips, stews, desserts to meats of all kinds. Looking at the basic components of the Slow Cooker, you will notice that the cooker consists of an oval-shaped cooking pot that is mostly made out of very high-quality glazed ceramic or porcelain. This is the housing where all the internal circuitry is being held.
A glass lid is also provided with the Cooker that allows the cooker to be closed properly by sitting in the grooves around the edges of the pot The condensed vapor that is produced inside the pot allows the device to create a very low yet effective pressure seal that helps the lid to stay firmly in place However, it should be noted that Slow Cookers are considerably safer to use when compared to other Pressure Cookers such, mainly because Slow Cookers tend to cook on a very low pressure as opposed to the high pressure utilized by pressure cookers,
Cooking with Crock Pot
The main Slow Cooking process will only require to prepare your ingredients, toss them into the Slow Cooker and cover with the provided glass lid. Once you have set the timer and heat level, you are good to go! Just leave the cooker and let it work its magic. However, there are certain instructions that you should keep in mind in order to ensure that you are able to reap the best Slow Cooking experience with your crock pot. These are: Always make sure to fill your Crockpot somewhere between one-half to three-fourths of the way to the top. If you fill up the Pot to the top, food will not cook properly Keep in mind that food on the bottom cooks much faster and will be tendered. Therefore, it is advised that you keep the most root veggies at the bottom If you want thicker and more concentrated juice, you can add a bit of cornstarch to your dish and mix it just 10-15 minutes prior to end time When cooking meat, always make sure to use cheaper cuts of meats, since they tend to work better with Slow Cookers.
This is partly because they have less fat and are perfect for long cooking times, that results in tender delicious meats. When layering multiple ingredients, always try to follow the instructions. As a general rule of thumb, vegetables should be at the bottom while meat should be at the top If you are cooking on Low Settings, try to avoid lifting up the lid from time to time. Each time you lift up the lid, heat will escape, adding another 20 minutes to your overall cooking time. If you are in dire need of checking the progress of your meal, spin the lid until the condensation falls off.
Cleaning and Maintenance
The stoneware inner pot of almost all modern Slow Cookers, including the Crock Pot itself is easily removable and dishwasher proof! However, if you want to ante-up your cleaning game, the following steps should help you along the way If you have some sticky residue lying in your pot, try making a mixture of baking soda and detergent and sprinkling it over the pot.
Let it sit for a while before scrubbing to remove any stuck-on food. If the above method isn't working, the next step is to add about cup of baking soda into the ceramic pot and filling it up with water. Add just a dash of dish soap and let it sit on HIGH for 2 to 4 hours. That should clear out any residue, After prolonged use, your pot may accumulate a layer of crud at the bottom of the barrel. The best way to remove this is to fill the pot with water and add half cup distilled vinegar and half cup baking soda for every 3 quarts of water, Once the mixture is ready, set your pot to LOW and scrub it after every 4 hours. In the end, you should have a shiny and nice-looking pot.
For cleaning the inner walls, take a small bowl and add a bit of ammonia. Place the bowl inside your Crock-Pot and place the lid. Let it sit overnight and wipe the walls in the morning! The stains will come right off.
Crock Pot Tips and Tricks
1. BEANS: Beans must be softened completely before combining with sugar and/or acidic foods. Sugar and acid have a hardening effect on beans and will prevent softening Dried beans, especially red kidney beans, should be boiled before adding to a recipe.
Fully cooked canned beans may be used as a substitute for dried beans 2. VEGETABLES: Many vegetables benefit from slow cooking and are able to develop their full flavor. They tend not to overcook in your slow cooker as they might in your oven or on your stovetop When cooking recipes with vegetables and meat, place vegetables in slow cooker before meat. Vegetables usually cook slower than meat in the slow cooker Place vegetables near the sides or bottom of the stoneware to facilitate cooking. 3. MILK: Milk, cream, and sour cream break down during extended cooking.
