Introduction
Want to eat healthy but you just cant be bothered to cook every single day for each meal? Maybe youre too busy or you find your time is taken up by other events during the day. If you find yourself constantly ordering in or eating outside, then you need to learn about the Bento Box!
A popular Japanese invention, the bento box is basically a system that divides your meals into different compartments ensuring a balanced diet and meal options that are easy to prep in advance.
Neglecting your health and making poor choices when it comes to your food can lead to several issues. With lunchtime being the part of the day when the majority of people eat unhealthy snacks, the bento box is a great way to change that. Bento lunch boxes are a great way to portion control. Ready to eat healthy? Lets begin!
Step 1: Pick A Protein
Cheeseburger Cups
These mini cups are a perfect fit into a bento box! A simple that can be prepped at night and baked in the morning!
Makes: 6 burgers
Time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
For burgers:
- 1 lb. Ground beef
- 2 tbsp. Brown sugar
- 1 tbsp. Mustard
- Cheese, shredded
- cup ketchup
- 1 cup Worcestershire sauce
For biscuits:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 5 tbsp. Shortening
- 2 tsp baking powder
- tbsp. Salt
- cup milk
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 f.
Combine flour, salt, baking powder and shortening.
Gradually add in the milk until a smooth dough has formed.
On a flour dusted counter, roll out dough and knead to a smooth ball.
Divide into 6 and flatten into a muffin pan. Leave to rest.
In the meantime, cook beef until browned. Add in the other ingredients and combine well.
Top the dough with the beef and add on the cheese.
Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown!
Ham and Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese
Carbazole - a German blue cheese is creamy and perfectly complements the rye bread and black forest ham. Easy to make, pair this with a delicious salad and complete your bento box.
Makes:
Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 oz. Black forest ham, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp. Unsalted butter, softened
- 2 oz. Carbazole cheese, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp. Caramelized onions,
- 2 slices, light rye bread,
Directions:
Butter a side of each slice of bread and place buttered side down into a hot pan. Butter on each slice and keep aside.
Top one slice of bread with the other ingredients and cover with the other slide.
Toast for 5 minutes at least.
Sweet Mustard and Grilled Cheese
Sweet hot mustard is the perfect pairing with cheese and pretzel roles. An easy and quick recipe that keeps you full! Combine with a pickled salad for the perfect bento lunch box.
Makes:
Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 tsp sweet hot mustard
- 1 soft pretzel roll
- 1/3 cup Jarlsberg cheese
- 1 tsp unsalted butter
Directions:
Cut pretzel roll in half and flatten slightly with a rolling pin.
On the inner sides of the pretzel, spread some mustard. Butter the outsides of the roll.
Using a nonstick pan, crisp the pretzel roll with the buttered part facing the pan. Add on your cheese and close the pretzel!
Toast for about 5 minutes so the cheese melts.
Ready to serve!
Basic Poached Meatball Mix
This is a great starter recipe for several meatball dishes!
Makes: 20 24 meatballs
Time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. ground beef or beef and pork
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- tsp salt
- tsp black pepper, or to taste
- cup soft breadcrumbs
- 3 tbsp. milk or water, optional
Directions:
With the meat in large bowl, work it rapidly using your hands or a wooden spoon until sticky.
Add all other ingredients except the milk/water. Use milk/water if the mixture is dry.
Divide into 2024 portions and shape into a ball.
In a large frying pan, bring to a boil some water - about 1 inch.
Once it starts boiling, add the meatballs to poach.
Cover pan and cook for 5 minutes. Drain away water.
Allow the meatballs cool. They can be frozen now or move onto the recipes below on how to flavor them. Defrost as many meatballs as needed before proceeding.
Sweet and Sour Meatballs
Sweet, sour, and delicious! You can use all pork rather than beef, or a beef-pork mix.
