INTRODUCTION
birth of the blender girl
Hello, my name is Tess, and Im a blendaholic.
And when it comes to passing on my addiction to others, Im also an enabler. But fear not. This habit (one you may soon find yourself hooked on, too) is healthy, and comes with a blender-load of positive side effects.
We cant bottle time, so in our hectic lives weve taken to bottling, canning, boxing, and vacu-packing everything else. Convenience foods offer a quick (and often, virtually empty) way to fill up on the fly, and its only human that we make the trade-off.
But we dont have to compromise on health, nutrition, or good eating just because weve got pressing things to do. Enter the blender, which makes healthy fast food possible. This phenomenal machine is the greatest culinary gift bestowed on us since fire and spoons! Blending makes life easier, levels the playing field in the kitchen, and allows anybody to whip up nutrient-dense, tasty foods with limited skills and time.
No, we dont check our teeth at the door. While this book does contain a repertoire of drinks, smoothies, and soups, youll find more here than food to sip, glug, or scoop up in a spoon. My recipes are blender centered but by no means blender only. I favor blender-inspired dishesappetizers, snacks, salads, desserts, and easy main dishes you can attack with your trusty knife and fork. The blended componentssauces, spreads, and condimentsplay a vital role in these dishes; a delicious pesto or homemade mayo can elevate that basic bowl of pasta or plate of steamed vegetables from bland and boring to brilliant.
So, okay, yes, in addition to being an addict and an enabler, Im also a zealot! But I hasten to say, not an evangelist. Im neither a foodie nor a chef nor a gourmet shopaholic. Im a regular person and a self-taught cook who just loves food.
i became the blender girl by accident
I felt constantly lethargic in my teens, and was eventually diagnosed with Epstein-Barr. At the suggestion of a naturopath, I gave up gluten, dairy, and meat, and felt better almost overnight. Id been brought up on a conventional meat-and-three-veg diet, and was, indeed, both gluten and dairy intolerant. This was my awakening to food as medicine and a revolution in the way I ate. I was now an omnivore with a dilemma, but would have to wait years to read Michael Pollans eye-opening book. I pursued a keen interest in the relationship between food and health, studied nutrition science, and took cooking classes to develop my culinary skills.
In my early twenties, my friend Toni introduced me to macrobiotics, which became an important part of my ongoing journey of discovery. However, after following this regime religiously, I still didnt feel as good as I knew I could.
Frustrated that I hadnt found the golden ticket, I was convinced that there had to be, somewhere out there, a perfect whole-foods diet that would be my magical cure. As a perfectionist, I was going to master the art of my own health even if it killed me!
In my self-imposed and largely self-directed crusade, I tried countless whole-foods diets. I became vegetarian, then vegan, discovered the benefits of raw foods, practiced Body Ecology anti-candida principles, employed Chinese yin and yang strategies, dabbled in Ayurvedic techniques, tried out the blood-type theory, embraced the pH Miracle alkalinity plan, and whipped up zillions of green smoothies. Yes, I really was one of those people who finds the answer every six months. But while all these healthy approaches had things to offer, none was quite one-size-fits-me. When I embraced the concept of bio-individualitythe recognition that no single, blanket health strategy will work for everybodythings shifted.
I supplemented my knowledge with an intuitive-experiential approach, and discovered that flexibility and fluidity, not rigidity, were for me keys to well being. Today I cherry-pick from all of the healthy diets Ive tried, working successful practices into my immune-boosting Tess diet. This diet adapts in response to climate, stress, emotions, physical activity, and specific health questions that arise. Im a seasonal eater. In the hotter months, I eat a high percentage of raw foods; when its cold, more cooked foods. But green alkaline smoothies, juices, and soups are year-round staples.
With those as a focus when I started my blog, I got inspiration from my blender, the sblended machine that helps me maintain a healthy lifestyle with ease and great gustatory pleasure. I quickly saw blending not only as a method of food preparation but also as a guiding metaphor for how I live.
the perfect blend
Combining different concepts, flavors, and philosophies plays a crucial part in my ideal balance of food, exercise, work, and fun. While my approach isnt a system exactly, it does add up to a recipe for success and happiness, and one that I believe is worth sharing.
A diet featuring ample quantities and varieties of leafy greens, alkaline vegetables, and raw sprouted nuts, seeds, and grains, combined with daily green juices and smoothies, can be beneficial to just about anyone. In addition to this, each of us will discover that individualized, perfect blend of joyful activities, fulfilling work, loving relationships, time with family, food, exercise, and more. With all this in mind, my recipes aim for versatility and simplicity.
