Introduction
There is this well-known story in marketing where the famousmarketer, Gary Halbert, would ask his students a question: if they were in acontest with him to sell the most hamburgers and they could have just oneadvantage, what would it be? His students would give answers such as they wouldwant the best meat, the best sesame buns, the best location, etc.
After his students finished giving their answers, Gary wouldthen tell his students that he would give them all of the advantages they askedfor yet he would still beat them as long as they give him this one advantagewhich is
A starving crowd!
Or, a starving niche. It is for this reason why Ifeel that this may be the single most important book youll ever read ifyoure thinking about starting an online business. One of the main reasonsnewbies fail online is because they break one of the most fundamental rules of marketingand that is, before you create a product, you need to figure out if there is a demandto buy your product.
Thats right not just be interested in your product, butto buy as in to give you money. You need, as Gary Halbertmentions, a starving crowd.
That is where this book comes in, because inside this book arestarving niches (10 of them, to be exact) that have people who are not just windowshopping, but who have been proven to pay for products and services within that niche and want to buy productsand services within their respective niches, and thats what this bookis all about.
Overview of Topics to be covered
Instead of following your passion or your heart, TheStarving Niches is about not so much about your passion, but aboutwhat other people are passionate about so passionate, that they arewilling to spend money sometimes lots of it (hopefully, on you) to get whatthey want. That is how you build a business (as opposed to a hobby.)
Although there are many more niches with passionate buyersthan whats listed in this book, the 10 we will focus on are:
- Health,Wellness and Beauty
- Businessand Marketing
- Financeand Trading
- Self-Helpand Spirituality
- Relationshipsand Dating
- Petsand Pet Care
- Recipesand Cooking
- Fitness
- Outdoor/Green
- Artsand Culture
For each niche, well talk about some numbers how big isthe niche? How much money do people spend on products related to that niche peryear, and how many other people are selling products in that niche online?Well also go into some specific sub-niches for each starving niche, and giveexamples of products that may inspire you.
Each chapter ends with a list of websites and resources thatwill help you learn more about the niche in question and decide whether it isthe best starving niche for you.
Finally, I will walk you through some specific steps you cantake to do keyword research and identify new starving niches not covered inthis book. As I said, there are so many potential niches online that it issimply not practical to cover them all in a single book. Each of the niches Ihave covered is jam-packed with potential sub-niches (and even sub-sub-niches)that have starving crowds just waiting to buy the fantastic product youregoing to create but you may have something else in mind, or want to ventureoff the beaten path. The final chapter will give you some easy-to-use, freetools that can help you identify hot topics and trends, and use thatinformation to figure out whether theres a starving niche for the product youhave in mind.
By the time you are done reading this book, you will haveall the tools you need to find your particular audience among the billions ofinternet users worldwide, and to brainstorm and create the perfect product tosell to them. Once you understand that its all about the audience, creating abest-selling product is going to be easy. Life is difficult enough theres nopoint in doing things the hard way if you dont have to. When youre selling toa starving niche market, internet marketing is easy.
Lets get started!
Chapter 1 Why Niches Matter
What is a Niche?
Merriam-Webster defines niche this way:
- A job, activity, etc., that is very suitable for someone.
- The situation in which a businesss products or services can succeed by being sold to a particular kind or group of people.
- An environment that has all the things that a particular plant or animal needs in order to live.
For purposes of internet marketing (and making money,) weare concerned with is the second one, although the first may also apply inparticular situations.
Why Finding a Niche Is an Essential Component of InternetMarketing
The key to finding the right niche for yourself is findingout where the customers are. There are certain niche markets that are alwayspopular, but even there, the goal is to find or create a sub-niche. In order tocompete online, you need to identify the customers who are hungry for whatyoure selling.
What is the Starving Niche Market?
The goal of this book is to help you identify the nichesthat have a built-in audience people who are endlessly hungry for whatyou are selling, whether its a product or information.
Thats right endlessly hungry.
One classic example of this is the Make Money Onlineniche. If youve been keeping up with the internet marketing or makemoney online niche for a while, youve probably heard of the term, shinyobject chaser. Its a term used to describe people who purchase oneinternet marketing product or make money online product after another, and theyusually purchase it with the hopes that this very next one will be the answerto their money woes.
The term shiny object chaser usually has a negativeconnotation, but its definitely not uncommon to find people like this in almostany hot niche. Take the personal development/self-help/self-improvementniche (one of the niches we will cover) for example. Ive known several friendswho buy one self-help/motivational book after another. They are into the Lawof Attraction, so after buying The Secret, they will buy other Lawof Attraction books, even though they pretty much all say the same thing.
I used to read a lot of goal setting books and havepurchased several books on goal setting in the past. I can tell you they prettymuch all talk about the same methods.
In the next chapter, Ill tell you how you can takeadvantage of something popular that people are already buying to offer them aunique twist of pretty much the same thing.
