First of all, I am most grateful to the film makers who cooperated with me in preparing this book, thereby helping me to interpret their work more accurately. I conducted personal interviews with the following directors, most of whom discussed their work with me more than once during the long period in which I was engaged in the preparation of the present volume: George Cukor, Fred Zinnemann, Stanley Kubrick, Carol Reed, Joseph Losey, Bryan Forbes, John Schlesinger, and Ken Russell. In addition, I watched Alfred Hitchcock shooting his next-to-last film on location in London, and talked with Howard Hawks and with George Stevens at the Chicago International Film Festival, and with Francis Coppola at the Cannes International Film Festival. Moreover, Charles Chaplin and David Lean examined a draft of the chapters on their work. I also interviewed Karel Reisz and Lindsay Anderson about British Social Realism; cinematographer James Wong Howe about working with Howard Hawks; Alec Guinness about working with Carol Reed and David Lean; Olivia de Havilland about working with George Cukor; Evelyn Griffith Kunze, D. W. Griffith's second wife, in connection with the Prologue of this book; Bryan Foy, director of the first all-talking picture, about the advent of sound; and Fred MacMurray about working with George Stevens.
