Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer, April 1876. "If I were an Indian,"
wrote Custer, "I often think[,] I would greatly prefer to cast my lot among
those of my people adhered to the free open plains rather than submit
to the confined limits of a reservation, there to be the recipient
of the blessed benefits of civilization, with its vices thrown in without stint or measure."

Acknowledgments
In addition to the vast legion of scholars and "buffs" whose writings and conversations have provided intellectual stimulation, the author would like to thank the following. That distinguished military historian, Dr. Albert A. Nofi, first suggested that I contribute to the "Great Campaigns" series. Joseph Fox supplied source materials, and Father Vincent A. Heier valuable ''sidebar" suggestions. Kitty Belle Deernose, Museum Curator of the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, energetically pursued illustrations with which to enhance the volume. Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, USAF (Ret.), lent his expertise in the field of Victorian weaponry, while W. Donald Horn offered an expert's comments on the Little Bighorn fight. Special thanks are due Gary B. Gouin, who graciously applied his erudition and analytical powers to the manuscript.
The photograph on page 227 is from the Western History Collections, University of Oklahoma Library. All other photographs appear with the kind courtesy of the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
A Note on Nomenclature
One of the minor debates surrounding Custer's last battle concerns the proper spelling of its site's name. I have compromised by using the government-favored "Little Bighorn" in the main text and "Little Big Horn" (as well as the contemporary "Little Horn'') when quoting accounts using these instead.
