INTRODUCTION
Social anxiety is one of the most common psychological challenges since it affects about 5 to 7% of subjects in the general population, over a long period most often. This condition is defined by an excessive and embarrassing fear of the other's eyes in situations of simple or more formal interactions, whether in front of a group or a single person, with important consequences in terms of anticipatory anxiety and social evasion.
However, social anxiety is a mixture of anxiety and discomfort that everyone feels from time to time. For example, on the eve of an exam or presentation, it is normal to feel a little anxious. Social anxiety is, therefore, a normal reaction to potential danger. It also seems that it can increase the performance to a task (e.g. sports competition) when it is at a moderate level. On the other hand, if social anxiety affects your daily functioning and causes you significant distress, it is possible that it is related to a serious social anxiety challenges. This can cause a lot of difficulties and suffering.
When its intensity is high, social anxiety can reduce concentration, invade thoughts, cause memory and speech problems (it can be difficult to speak), almost "lose your head", even if you know that your feelings of social anxiety are exaggerated. CHAPTER 1
UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL ANXIETY: ORIGIN OF SOCIAL ANXIETY
The child between eight and ten months normally presents anxious reactions if separated from the mother or in the presence of an alien adult. This is an age in which the capacities of locomotion and displacement develop, and this type of anxiety would have the function of safeguarding the excessively intrepid child.
The Origins of Social Anxiety
The safety signs are associated with the presence of the mother; the presence of a stranger activates the alert system.
Beyond this normal reaction, it has been asked whether some attitudes of the child facing new situations can already recall the phenomenon of social anxiety and therefore predict the onset of the latter in adulthood.
After several studies it has been concluded that starting from a constitutional predisposition which manifests itself from the first months of life through an accentuated reactivity towards new situations, there would appear manifestations of behavioral inhibition around the age of two years destined to evolve towards social anxiety.
One of the leading scholars in this field, Jerome Kagan of Harvard University, states that 15-20 per cent of white children is born with this predisposition to manifestations of behavioral inhibition associated with shyness; he hypothesizes a dysfunction at the level of the amygdala that would be activated in a particular way in situations of stress.
The possibility of switching from inhibited behavior to uninhibited behavior is, however, superior to the inverse one also because the predisposition to develop social anxiety tends to diminish due to the effect of acquired, educational and environmental factors.
The inheritance of social anxiety has been demonstrated: in the case of individuals suffering from social anxiety, the chances that their first-degree relative will present such discomfort are triple compared to those of the general population; moreover, if the parents are shy or anxious it is very likely that the child adopts similar behaviors.
At the origin of the disorder sometimes there may be an event that is experienced as a trauma: a humiliation suffered in front of many people, such as being mocked by comrades or taken back by the teacher at school for some reason in front of the whole class.
Sometimes it happens that it is the family that prohibits or limits to the maximum the contacts with the outside as well as to hinder visits home by friends and all this prevents the child from becoming familiar with social interactions of various kinds.
Thus, some parents, while not showing social anxiety, pass on to their children some rules that can induce in their children a certain distrust of others because they have always described them as a danger, a threat, not trustworthy or by inviting their children to pay attention to that that others might think of him and therefore take into account appearances.
Anxiety is a problem that afflicts more and more people. This is largely due to a change in society that is increasingly directed towards a model of the fast life. Starting from a concrete look at today's social context, it is possible to identify at least 3 sources of anxiety and propose 3 solutions to combat it.
