Foreword

While reading this delightful and important book by Mark Michaels and Patricia Johnson, I was overcome by a bittersweet nostalgia. I remembered how thrilling, blissful, and transformative my first Tantric experiences were. I also remembered the challenges of finding teachers with whom I truly resonated. Oh, how I wish Mark and Patricia had been teaching Tantra twenty-five years ago.

I was inspired to study and practice Tantra at the peak of the AIDS crisis, which was having a devastating impact on my friends and colleagues in the New York theatrical community. I did not approach the study of Tantra with the intention of becoming a better lover, or to enhance my relationship with a belovedeven though those things were blissful by-products of my Tantric journey. I began to study Tantra because I was looking for a way for members of my community to be able to have ecstatic sex again, this time more safely. Tantra quickly proved to be an approach that could easily embrace ecstasy, safer sex, and intense love.
