What Other Readers Thought
About Pathetically Apathetic
Its an ironic endeavor youve undertaken, trying to provoke passion into your openly dispassionat e audience.
I loved it a lot. I feel like there was a lot of revealing how the average lifestyle is so apathetic. I felt called out, but in a good way!
I pick up three voices in your writing. The voice of research and its demonstration. The voice of questioning it. Your internal voice tying loose ends. I enjoy yo ur writing!
I think its bold. Daring. It doesnt shy away from hard truths, but still has moments that bring you back with grace and patience that is needed for the process . I am really enjoying it! Its challenging some ideas and things Ive been struggling with in my personal life so I think it will do that for othe rs as well.
Its a tell ya straight kind of book that challenges the reader to evaluate their actions and motives to become a non-apathetic, intentional and driven individual. This would be a book I could frequently come back to . Even though this topic could become heavy and depressing, it doesnt feel that way reading it because of the use of life examples, practical action plans and real-talk.

An Introduction to Apathy
I might as well jump to the question youre already thinking: whats so important or different about THIS book? What makes this one stand out in the crowd of other helpful books? Who the heck is this Harley guy? I would be asking the same questions if I were you.
Unlike the motivational speakers, business tycoons or celebrities that typically write helpful books, I have no obvious reason for writing a self-help book. I grew up as a privileged white kid in Dallas, Texas, with all of my needs easily met. There were no worries of making the mortgage or car payments. There were no teenage pregnancies or jail sentences. I wasnt born with a disability or limp. I dont have a dramatic story that could be told onstage to motivate a roa ring crowd.
So, why the heck did I write this book? Because really, there are plenty of helpful books out there. There are a lot of smart people who earned PHDs, built great businesses and persevered through terrible times. Because of their great triumphs, they want to share their knowledge. They sit down for interviews to share their life stories. They write books to inspire us. They create curriculums we can pay for so they can share the really g ood stuff.
Most of these smart people have good intentions with their work. They want to improve the world. It makes them sad that so few people share in their wealth. So, year after year, theres always a new book to help teach the hidden secrets to success.
The thing is, I dont have any secrets to give you. There arent any hidden revelations or treasures to discover in this book. Not to burst any bubbles here, but all those secrets the other books talk about? Yeah, those arent really secrets. Thats just a nice phrase to convince you of the authors guru-esque knowledge. The real truth is, I cant promise that your life will dramatically change for the better because of this book.
That being said, this book could be absolutely fascinating to you. It could be one of your favorite books youve ever read. It could mess with your ideas on life and positively impact you. It did with some of my test readers before publishing. What I look to illustrate in this book is a clear, honest understanding about a core truth with our society. Heres the deal: most people ar e apathetic.
Its more than just not caring about some kid in Africa. Its an apathy thats deep within our society and accepted by everyone. Theres a cognitive dissonance, a conflict within ourselves, that we all suffer from. We keep coming up with great ideas for our future, but these ideas and ambitions always seem to fall short, without us really knowing why. Thats what cognitive dissonance is, thoughts not lining up with actions. No matter how much knowledge is available to us, we fail to make positive actions a reality i n our lives.
If youve read a lot of books on personal development, but you just cant seem to find a breakthrough, this could be your book. If you like getting bold, honest feedback about how the world works, this is definitely your book. If you like a book with practical, actionable steps to actually solve your problems, you can walk away from this book wi th clarity.
While Im not a guy whos earned a PHD, persevered through dramatic injuries or pulled myself out of immense poverty, I did do one thing: I changed from being an apathetic person to a caring, non-apathetic person. I examined my life and realized that I didnt know how to genuinely improve myself. I didnt know HOW to take action. HOW do I become a guy who actually sees things through to the end?
For the past three years, since I was 22 years old, I started to get honest with myself. I took action. I failed to honor my actions plenty of times. But, because of these past three years, I can now confidently move forward towards whatever desires I have in my heart. Ive proven to myself that I can actually turn desire into reality. Ill be using many stories, quotes, studies and statistics to back myself up, but I cant deny that, at 25 years old, the rest of my life looks pret ty exciting.
If you need a book like this, prepare yourself. While this book can bring you the positive results Ive experienced, those results come with pain and honesty. Ill look to challenge you on the many assumptions we all face about ourselves and about life. Were all part of this issue. Were all quite apathetic, and its about time you learned why.
....
Speaking of challenges, Ill go ahead and start with one of the core assumptions in our culture. Psychologists have studied this topic extensively and its deeply ingrained in our society. It unites us, for better or for worse.
Do You Believe Youre a Good Person?
Most people believe they are. Luke Bryan, the country singer, even sang about this in his song, Most People Are Good, which topped the U.S. & Canadian Billboard Country charts in 2017. In research conducted by Patrick Heck, a social psychologist, he finds that 65% of Americans believe they are above average in intelligence, which Id say is a good character trait. Whether its because of our morals, past accomplishments or our social status, we consider ourselves to be really aweso me people.
