Julie is an author of nine published books and has worked in the field of psycho-spiritual studies for 30 years. She has lectured internationally in major centres, schools and universities. Identifying the need for an educational programme that encompassed in-depth spiritual self-awareness with intuition, in 1996 Julie founded the School of Insight and Intuition in London, where she was principal for 14 years. During this time she created an accredited Spiritual Healing Practitioner course and a Psycho-spiritual programme. In February 2005, modules of this programme were validated and implemented as part of a BSc degree in Integrated Health at Westminster University in London. In 2005 she received an MPhil degree from Surrey University on the effects of psycho-spiritual development in the lived world of the individual. Julie continues to work as a sensitive and teaches consciousness studies, and psychic and healing development.

Many grateful thanks go to: Marcus Williamson and my husband Rupert for checking my copy, and their support; to Michael Mann for his encouragement, and all the thousands of people, both clients and students, from whom I have learnt a great deal. Most particularly to all those who endeavour to dissolve their fears, and who try, in whatever way they can, to make the world a better place.
Introduction
What sort of world would it be if we were all balanced human beings? This, of course, is a dream we can only imagine. Nonetheless, it seems to me that we are on the verge of dynamic movement and change and there are the tiny sprouts of enlightenment emerging. They are delicate and need a lot of care. I have long thought that the answer to the worlds problems lies not just in politics, religion or science but also within ourselves. Each and every one of us. Of course, exploring and advancing the self has many avenues and I am not so naive as to believe that developing ones intuition and any psychic abilities provides all the answers. However, it can, and does help people blossom, giving them a sense of who and what they truly are, and how to live in this crazy world.
I have written this book from a lifetime of interest and work in the spiritual and intuitive. I started out on my journey with a messianic mission to find the ultimate truth. Slowly over the years I realized that there may not be an absolute truth. Perceptions are born out of our view at any given time and place. In The Psychics Handbook I have relayed information on authorities and models of energies, many of which I have successfully used in psychic, healing and psycho-spiritual education. However, it is good to bear in mind that these systems are interpretations of energy experience. I do not necessarily agree with the interpretations of all the authorities, as any model does not necessarily have to be literally true or real for it to be a useful point of focus. Models may be best used as scaffolding upon which to climb to the next stage. In an unlimited universe there may not be any structures at all, but we mere mortals require some structure to endeavour to understand the sometimes nebulous and subtle energies around us.
Being born and brought up in the UK in the middle part of the 20th century means that my own background and culture is largely Christian. However, in my opinion the best of Christian ethics, morals and principles are present in all faiths. A Buddhist, Muslim, Jew or anyone of another faith, even someone with no faith at all, can just as easily develop their intuition. Over the years I have led groups with people of just about every nationality, faith and culture. The psycho-spiritual process works for anyone who engages their intent to further their progress.
The concept of, we are all one is echoed in many religions, and recently some contemporary science is relaying similar concepts in an entangled universe. This idea presents us with a dichotomy, as on one hand we seem to be moving towards an interconnected world and consequently have to work together. On the other hand, to release worn-out negativities and expand consciousness, it is imperative that individuals concentrate on themselves. Ironically, it is only when the individuals consciousness has risen that their energy becomes clearer and resonates truth. Then, and only then, can they be authentically compassionate and consequently help others. If the genuine intent of the individual is active, it creates a clear resonant energy that goes out into the world.
In the last few years we have seen spiritual healing becoming more and more recognized and it is now officially accepted as a bona fide therapy. This is wonderful news. However, psychics have been labelled as entertainment! In doing this, the powers that be have bundled all psychic work into one box. Once, the seer, priestess and sage were revered by their community; theirs was considered a sacred art, which, like any art, takes training and practice. Psychic practices incorporate a vast array of different levels of work and understanding. In this book I have endeavoured to uncover the rich, rewarding and profound aspects of this wide subject and in some small way have tried to open doors towards good education in the psychic arts. This book gives an overview of psychic perceptions and how to discern the energies. It is written both for the novice and the more advanced student, as well as any who are interested in progressing their lives.
If you have ten fingers and you want to play the piano, with practice and dedication you can learn. You may never become a concert pianist but the music can inspire you nonetheless. It is the same with psychic perception. Anyone, with practice and dedication, can develop this natural ability. Some will become professional, others will simply enjoy the inspiration it brings to them. Being psychic is not only for the few, since we all have this gift if we care to acknowledge and develop it. As well as relaying perceptions of psychic energies in this work, I have incorporated information about the psycho-spiritual process so essential to both our own growth and being a good psychic practitioner.
