Introduction
How tough is it for you to stay in the moment right now? With modern technology and a host of distractions, it can be more than just a little bit challenging to be able to remain focused on what you have going on right now in your life.
Theres a variation of old sayings that talk about minding yourself, minding your business, and being mindful of the things around you.
These are important tidbits of advice and some that we just dont tend to pay that much attention to any longer.
Why?
Basically because modern life is so busy that its difficult to manage to keep our focus on the here and now. We worry about what we have to do later on. We think about all of the responsibilities that we have at the moment. We ponder and fret about the things that might happen to us in the future. We spend too much time thinking about the mistakes that we made and what we could have done differently.
Ultimately, we arent thinking much about the present moment, so we cant possibly be mindful of the things that we have going on at any specific moment.
Yet life is lived in the moment, in the present. It isnt lived in the past. It isnt lived in the future. Sure, you can make plans for the future. You can learn lessons from past mistakes. But you cant live anywhere but in the present moment.
This is why being mindful of the things that are going on around you at this very moment are so important.
The constant dream of what could be
Yet there is a pervasive and ever-present fascination with what could be or what might have been. Look at some of the most popular movies in recent memory and youre bound to notice that many of them share some of the same aspects: they are either looking into the past or into the future.
Take your pick.
Look back on the past few days of your life. What were you focusing on? If it was the middle of the week, were you thinking about the weekend? If it was the weekend, were you thinking about the work week and what you have to get done?
Were you thinking about a date that you went on and what could have gone wrong? Were you thinking about the things that went right?
There are a million things that tend to get us all worked up and focused on issues aside from the things that are happening right now.
The mind of the moment
When youre in the moment, youre thinking about whats happening to you in your life right now. Youre not worried about what could happen, what did happen, or what might happen.
You are, essentially, being mindful of what youre working on at this very moment and that is a powerful thing. When you are focused on something other than right now, then you are not 100% devoted to whatever it is that youre doing.
And youre not 100% devoted to your life right now, either.
You are somewhere else, at least a part of you is.
This is what mindfulness is all about; getting yourself into the moment, helping you to scrape away all of the distractions that exist around you and doing what needs to be done and enjoying life as it comes to you.
Life is about living in the moment, but with so much to lead us astray, its easy to become lost in different things.
The house that you want.
The boat that you should get.
The car that you should be driving because your neighbor has that same car and they dont have half as good a job as you.
The coworker who keeps getting the recognition for everything even though you believe that you should be getting at least some of it.
As you can see, there are reasons everywhere to not live in the moment. We have devolved into a species that relies on material possessions for happiness. We measure our success against other people even though theres no need. We look at the size of the house that someone else has and we think that defines their success when in fact 70 percent of the people who buy larger homes (4 bedrooms or more) have no savings and use every penny of their income to afford their lifestyle. In other words, they are one missed paycheck away from losing everything.
They are not being mindful of the present moment. They are too busy trying to look like they are so much better than those around them, even their loved ones.
How easy is it to be mindful? Its not easy at all. Companies today spend billions of dollars every year trying to convince you that you dont have enough or you dont have the right possessions or you made mistakes or that you should be planning on that next vacation or the future and everything else to the point where you dont have any room to breathe.
Finding peace to live in the moment
In order to feel comfortable with yourself, in order to truly know yourself, you need to be mindful of what you have right now, who you are, and to manage to scrape away all the detritus that exists in the world.
Thanks to a complicated, high tech, and increasingly marketed world, this is not an easy accomplishment. Sometimes it takes meditation.
Well explain what meditation is in Chapter 2, but its not what the majority of people think it is because they saw a crime drama on TV that showed it, or they saw a Vaudeville act that portrayed it.
In this book we will discover the power of mindfulness and how meditation can get us to that moment when we feel more at peace. It will require us to move through the pain or suffering in our lives.
You may not think that you have any pain or suffering right now, but unless youre living in the moment and are mindful right now, you are.
Theres great peace to be gained in life through mindfulness of the self in the here and now. So lets take a journey to a new realm of existence where anything is possible and where you will live your greatest life
Right here, right now
Chapter 1 Mindfulness
What is mindfulness? Is it taking care of the things that are important? After all, we heard plenty growing up about minding our business or being mindful or what we say, what we do, where we go, and so on.
So what is it to be mindful?
Mindfulness is a presence in the moment. That may sound obvious, or even obtuse, but when you begin to think about what you ponder and where your thoughts tend to go most of the time, youll begin to realize why we are rarely mindful of the present moments in our lives.
What were you just thinking when you started to read this book? Did you think about all of the times that you didnt feel at peace? Were you wishing that you could be more comfortable with yourself, with your situation in life, with the amount of money that you had, the kind of education that you received, or anything else?
Were you thinking about someone you met recently? Or about someone you lost?
Were you pondering the next purchase that you will make, such as having to go grocery shopping this evening or the TV that you saw in the store the other day?
You see, all around us, at every moment, there are plenty of things to distract us from the here and now. It doesnt mean that we cant be thinking about those things, but for the majority of people in todays world, it tends to consume their lives, and they might focus on the bad things that happened in their life or the regrets that they have.
When you sit back and truly think about it, you might begin to realize that youre in a lot of pain. Emotional pain, physical pain, spiritual pain no matter what type of pain that it is, its real and it can keep you from fulfilling your lifes promise.
