THE BENEFITS
From decades of medical research conducted all around the globe, an ancient beverage has emerged as the ultimate health food. The most popular drink in the world after water, coffee can improve mental health, enhance athletic performance, aid weight loss, and offer us resistance to the most ravaging diseases of our time: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and neurological disorders like Parkinsons disease and Alzheimers. A vast wealth of new research tells us that the beloved daily ritual of enjoying hot, fragrant, delicious coffee can do more good for us than we ever thought.
Assuming it was bad for me, I stayed away from coffee until about four years ago, when I read in The New England Journal of Medicine about its spectacular health benefits. I began drinking Keurig K-cups; then I progressed to grinding and brewing my own coffee at home. Now coffee has become the greatest nutritional treat in my life. I can hardly go to sleep at night imagining the flavors and aromas Ill experience when dawn breaks and I prepare a new coffee. Theres no guilt, because along with all the sensory pleasure, Im giving myself tremendous health benefits. As you read in the introduction, so powerful are coffees benefits that The New England Journal of Medicine reports that drinking several cups a day reduces the risk of death from all causes by 15 percent in women and by 10 percent in men.
For decades, coffee was associated with poorer health because many coffee drinkers had higher-than-average weights and higher red meat and alcohol consumption, and they smoked and didnt exercise. But this enormous landmark study set aside those risk factors to examine the true effects of coffee, which are far more impressive than any of us had believed.
Whats in coffee that gives it a protective effect? Caffeine gets due credit for helping us wake up, but it also raises metabolism, boosts our physical speed and power, and can even make us happier. The true magic in coffee, however, lies in its polyphenols, which make coffee by far the greatest source of antioxidants in the average American diet. (See the .) Some coffee plants produce far more polyphenols than others, making themselves stronger, their beans taste better, and you healthier when you drink them. A perfect trifecta. Coffee is an ideal delivery mechanism for phenols, allowing them to be absorbed easily in the bloodstream, where they can reduce inflammation and oxidation, lower blood sugar, and reduce blood pressure.
These capabilities are profound. As I researched this book, every week, it seemed, new connections were discovered between coffee, fitness, and disease resistance, and the headlines began to follow. Even the World Health Organization has weighed in. Twenty-five years after classifying coffee as a possible carcinogen leading to bladder cancer, the WHO issued a press release announcing the findings of a group of scientists convened by its cancer agency. On June 15, 2016, the international group of twenty-three scientists wrote this in a press release:
After thoroughly reviewing more than 1,000 studies in humans and animals, the Working Group found that there was inadequate evidence for the carcinogenicity of coffee drinking overall.
Many epidemiological studies showed that coffee drinking had no carcinogenic effects for cancers of the pancreas, female breast, and prostate, and reduced risks were seen for cancers of the liver and uterine endometrium.
With the capabilities of average coffee making such news, imagine the greater potential of coffees with exponentially more phenols! This book will teach you how to find these better beans and, just as important, to prepare them in a way that preserves their essential goodness. But, first, lets look at all that coffee can do for you.
