The husband would hunt and gather food, while the wife would take care of the household. This premeditated arrangement of works came to be known as division of labor in families. Later on this was passed down to other establishments like industries, where labors were allocated works according to their skills and achievements.

Even here, men and women were given work according to their physical strength and capabilities. In primate communities that necessitated the election of a leader, a bout would be declared and whoever comes out as the winner would be automatically raised to the position of the leader.

Such set ups gave rise to the notion of alpha males who would be seen as the ideal man or a leader of the group. He would get the work done with utmost ease and style. He would talk and appeal to the ladies and have a certain charismatic spin to his personality. Looks wise, hed be the showstopper.

As clich as it sounds, the idea is still prevalent in our society. For many men, the idea of being an alpha male is more of a by-product of genetics and environment. Nothing can be farther from the truth. Yes, those 2 characteristics may have a heavy bearing on how many alpha males have become such but that doesnt mean only those with the right set of genes and/or are born and grew up in an alpha-conducive environment can become alpha males. No siree, you can become an alpha male even if you dont have the so-called genes or upbringing. You can work towards becoming an alpha male and enjoy a great degree of success. How to do that? Who Is An Alpha Male?

A n alpha male is the manifestation of the extreme qualities of maleness embodied in a single male. While it is an absurd expectation to look out for all the ideal properties of alpha male in one individual, our movies and books have not fallen behind on attempting the same.

You dont have to look far to find the examples. James Bond is the fitting sample. A man who loves his gadgets, scores the ladies with a single smile, is in great physical shape and kills the bad guys is as alpha male as it gets.

To better understand what an alpha male really is, lets do a serious word study on the word alpha. Alpha is actually the first letter in the Greek alphabet. As such, the word has come to be associated with being ranked first, e.g., being the best or the top in a class or group. The website internetslang.com sums up the word very well by defining it as being head person of a group.

Therefore, an alpha male is a man who is the head person of a group, the top dog or the boss. This kind of headship or leadership isnt necessarily formal. In fact, it isnt in most cases. Being top dog, boss or leader isnt about titles its about influence and control of both himself, the people around him and to a certain extent, their situations.

The alpha male isnt defined just by one quality but by several ones. All the different qualities of being a male when taken to their heights and displayed form the alpha male. Among other things, many say, is that an alpha male never fails to save the day. While saving the day could mean catching the king pin of a smuggling business and saving the lady captured by him, ending up impressing her, a wider interpretation is often followed.

A man who can take responsibilities is a man repeatedly looked up to. Given the prevalence of spineless men who are unsure of themselves and averse to taking responsibility for anything, this trait is one of those that make an alpha male someone worth admiring and emulating. The movies only portray the ideal situation. The lesson one may learn from them is how a real man should turn even an unfavorable situation in his stead and assume the role of a game changer in the direst of circumstances. The wider interpretation clause also says that an alpha male should be prepared for the worst situations and takes upon his shoulders all the pains should such situations arise. An example of these would be, of course, James Bond. Another one is McGyver, the lead character of the TV show of the same name that ran from 1985 to 1992 played by the actor Richard Dean Anderson. With his uncanny ability to get out of the tightest and deadliest spots using whatever materials are on hand at the moment, he is another cool example of an alpha male.

An alpha male is not to be confused with simply a macho man. In fact, the definition of macho being a man of virile, strong, tough and sexually attractive mane has very little to do with that of alpha males. Machismo is only a sub set of the whole set of Alpha Male. One could be a supremely macho guy and yet not an Alpha Male. An example of this would be my friendly neighborhood drunkard, who lives down our block. Hes virile (has a strong sex drive, so strong that hes fathered 3 first-borns from 3 different women), physically strong, buffed and a wee-bit handsome. But hes far from being top dog. If any, hes an omega male, i.e., bottom of the pack.
