Indeed, it could be said that I was destined to grow up and write Bad Girls because, when I was little, my mother was always telling me Susie Bad bedtime stories. Susie, it seems, just happened to engage in exactly the same bad behavior that I had engaged in that day, such as throwing a tantrum in the bakery because she (and I) wanted a cookie before dinner. The stories always ended with Susie regretting her bad behavior and promising never to be bad again. The moral and purpose of those cautionary tales were clear. Of course, the bad girls in this book are protagonists in bedtime stories of another sort, and want more than a forbidden cookie.
