Introduction: The Journey
T
he biggest question I received and I think this is the hardest one for us is that some people aren't losing weight on keto and I understand because when I first heard keto for two months I did not lose weight and it's really frustrating when you have an abundance of weight you need to lose and you're not losing it.
I started at 220 pounds and I couldn't afford to just dink around or hope that this worked, and maybe oh I'll lose 20 pounds if I feel like it. I chose this lifestyle for one reason, because I really needed to get that excess weight off my body. It was depressing and it was also just debilitating to not be able to move, and being tired all the time, so it was time for me to get that weight off. So I really understand when you say I need to lose weight, I feel that I understand that urgency and I want to help you do that but you also need to learn how to do it properly. So this book isn't going to be the 5 tips to lose weight, it's just not happen that way because it doesn't really work because I know what I am talking about and I tried it.
All the first things are going on be the reason you gained weight, and also the other diets failed, besides them not being keto. Obviously is that you had bad habits to begin with, and they're going to follow you into this diet way of eating, I shouldn't say that I'm sorry!
This way of eating it's not a diet, you are going to be doing this for the rest of your life. And also if you're doing this just to lose weight, when I started all I thought about is I have to lose weight! I have to lose Weight! And if that's all you're concerned about, you're not thinking about the longevity of your life and your body and everything long-term and that's okay.
If you kind of want to dabble in this, don't expect amazing results. If you're just going to dabble in it you need to commit. I told myself for two months I will commit to doing whatever I need to do. After that time I haven't lost weight or I don't feel like this is the right thing, I'm going to move on; I'm tired of wasting too much time and energy and starting over all the time. And I gave myself a good solid two months and said whatever it takes I have to do this.
Maybe you haven't quite committed to yourself that's step one. If you have not committed to doing this life cycle and really giving yourself the chance to experience it, then you technically are not in keto yet. You need to get that squared away. Secondly, all the emotional side of things, food is the major part of it. But what you think about continually is what's really going to determine your happiness.
If you're not feeling good inside and your environment is off, then you're not going to want to take care of yourself with food. When you're doing things that are making you happy and supporting your lifestyle, you naturally eat food to keep yourself happy and eating good food makes your environment better they go hand-in-hand.
You can't have one without the other, so double check, think about your environment, am I happy at home? Am I happy at work? You know I'm a hanging around with good people; you might need to let some people go for a while. If you're with friends who continually eat crap or talk about crap all the time, you're ingesting that emotionally all the time, and when you come home you're thinking I feel like crap I'm going to eat like crap or I feel awesome I feel good I want to treat my body the way I deserve to feel. Those are huge components.
You've got to get those things right and that was a big part of my life. I was just surrounding myself with negativity, and even though I'm generally not a negative person I wasn't really happy with work and the way things were going and it was affecting me. I was feeling guilty to spend time playing volleyball and doing the things that I loved and working at the gym because I felt like there's a billion other things I needed to do. Even though I've always been fairly active I need to be more regiment about the work that I actually needed to be doing, like actually lifting weights and things like that, or actually I needed to take a break to be honest.
I needed to stop doing some of the things I was doing and you're going to need to do those for a little while and you know that's okay. And taking some time out for you is perfectly fine.
Now let's get into the food related stuff if you're on keto, and you're not losing weight the biggest things I have found that kept me from losing weight was not exactly like counting carbs to nth degree because I can tell you that sometimes I had more carbs, and I lost more weight. And it doesn't have to do with hitting those low numbers, making sure you're less than 20 grams.
