Lesson 1. About This Guide

Goals

Picture 1 Understand how this guide is organized to facilitate learning

Picture 2 Set up an environment for self-paced exercises

This guide covers a wide range of technologies that help you manage both iOS and OS X devices and provides an intense and in-depth exploration of how to deploy and maintain iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan systems. This guide is for both self-paced learners working independently and those participating in an instructor-led course.

The primary goal of this guide is to help you formulate an effective plan for deploying and maintaining groups of Apple devices. You will be introduced to a variety of Apple management technologies, including Mobile Device Management, the Volume Purchase Program, and the Device Enrollment Program. To help you become truly proficient, this guide covers the theory behind the tools you will use. For example, not only will you learn how to use Profile Managerthe Apple implementation of Mobile Device Managementbut you will also learn about the ideas behind profile management, which makes configuration easier for both administrators and users while maintaining a highly secure environment.

Prerequisites

This guide assumes you have some knowledge of Apple devices. Specifically, you should be comfortable with basic navigation, troubleshooting, and networking for both iOS and OS X. When working through this guide, a more comprehensive understanding of OS X is preferred, including knowledge of how to troubleshoot the operating system. Refer to Apple Pro Training Series: OS X Support Essentials 10.11: Supporting and Troubleshooting OS X El Capitan (Peachpit Press, 2016) if you need to develop a solid working knowledge of OS X.

Further, a more comprehensive understanding of OS X Server is preferred, including knowledge of how to set up and maintain services configured in the Server app.

Note

OS X Server can provide the NetInstall service, which allows you to quickly deploy OS X system software and configuration to multiple Mac computers. Thus, the NetInstall service is often a key component for many OS X deployment workflows. Refer to Apple Pro Training Series: OS X Server 5.0 Essentials: Using and Supporting OS X Server on El Capitan (Peachpit Press, 2016) if you need to develop a solid working knowledge of OS X Server and NetInstall.

Unless otherwise specified, all references to systems are the most current versions available at the time of this writing. Because of subsequent upgrades, some screenshots, features, and procedures may be slightly different from those presented on these pages. The minimum referenced versions are as follows:

Picture 3 iOS version 9.3

Picture 4 OS X version 10.11.4

Picture 5 OS X Server version 5.1

Using the Apple Deployment Programs and Apple School Manager

The exercises in this guide illustrate how to enroll with either the Apple Deployment Programs for businesses or Apple School Manager for schools, including the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and the Volume Purchase Program (VPP). Of course, some of these programs are not available in all countries.

, lists many of the reasons why you might not be able to complete that exercise; if this is the case for you, simply read along with the exercise.
