Belgium is home to many interesting and delectable food recipes, and their beers are sometimes a part of their dishes, in addition to being popular on their own. Many Belgian beers are individually crafted by local artisanal brewers, using recipes that are generations old.
Belgians are quite fond of potatoes, and they love meat and game. Seafood is also an important part of their diet. They enjoy hearty stews and soups, and other types of dishes, as well. Medieval cuisine still impacts their cooking today, with dried fruits, vinegars, mustards and condiments that give their dishes a sweet/salty or sweet/sour taste. Some people argue that Belgians dont eat waffles for breakfast, but this recipe comes from Belgium. Theyre wonderful when served with all kinds of toppings, from syrup to berries or whipped topping or powdered sugar. They do eat them at other times of day, too.
Makes 10 Servings
Cooking + Prep Time: 35 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of flour, all-purpose
- 3/4 cup of sugar, granulated
- 3 1/2 tsp. of baking powder, sodium free
- 2 separated eggs, large
- 1 1/2 cups of milk, whole
- 1 cup of melted butter, unsalted
- 1 tsp. of vanilla extract, pure
To top: syrup or sliced strawberries, fresh
Instructions:
- Mix flour, baking powder and sugar in medium bowl. In separate bowl, beat the egg yolks lightly. Add the milk, vanilla and butter and mix thoroughly. Stir this mixture into the dry ingredients till barely combined. Beat the egg whites till they form stiff peaks and then fold them into the batter.
- Bake using pre-heated waffle iron and instructions from manufacturer, till waffles are golden brown in color. Serve with syrup or strawberries.
A typical breakfast in Belgium often is made with breads and cheese, like sliced Gouda, and honey or jam. The youngsters often enjoy sandwiches with cream cheese or Nutella.

Cooking + Prep Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
- 4 slices of bread, Tartines
- Butter, softened
- 2 slices of cheese, Gouda
- Honey or jam
Instructions:
- Spread the bread with butter and honey or jam.
- Place cheese slices between and place bread slices together. Its not rocket science, right? Serve.
Some of the best types of French toast are not from France at all. The Belgian variety is browned outside and tender and fluffy inside.
Makes 4 Servings
Cooking + Prep Time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
- 4 large eggs, free range
- 1/2 cup of spiced milk
- 4 slices of bread, slightly stale
- 2 tbsp. of butter, unsalted
- 1 tbsp. of sugar, powdered
Toppings: your favorites
Instructions:
- Beat eggs together. Add milk and flavor with your favorite spice. Soak bread in this mixture.
- Heat butter in fry pan. Cook slices of bread till golden brown in color. Sprinkle them with sugar and add your favorite toppings, as desired. Serve promptly.
This traditional stew comes from Flemish cooks in Belgium, and they love it, especially in the winter. Its often served with green beans, tasty fries or a pleasing salad.

Cooking + Prep Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs. of 1-cubed stew meat, beef
- 3/8 cup of flour, all-purpose
- 1/4 cup of butter, unsalted
- 4 diced onions, medium
- 1 2/3 cups of water, filtered
- 1 sprig of thyme, fresh
- 2 bay leaves, medium
- Salt, kosher, as desired
- Pepper, ground, as desired
- 1 x 12 oz. bottle or can of beer, brown
- 1 slice of bread, whole wheat
- 1 tbsp. of mustard, prepared
- 2 x 1-sliced carrots
- 1 tbsp. of vinegar, white wine
- 2 tbsp. of sugar, brown
