When we think of any particular Low Carb dietary plan, the word ketogenic instantly pops up in our minds. That is mainly because the Ketogenic diet is highly effective in its results. Many people find the ketogenic diet highly restrictive too, but that again helps in achieving better health goals.

The diet originated as a result of experimental studies to treat patients of Parkinson or epilepsy through dietary changes. Researchers found out that having high fat and low carbohydrates in the diet can result in positive change in the mental and physical health of the patients. Those who opted this diet started to improve on their mental condition and other health symptoms were also observed in them. From there on Ketogenic diet started to take its present shape. A fat molecule contains strong bonds in its triglycerides. Every time a single fat molecule breaks down, it releases three times greater energy than the breakdown of a single carbohydrate molecule. Carbohydrates are known for providing instant energy to the body as they are easier and quicker to digest. That is why every time we feel weak and goes through hypoglycemia; we look for something sweet and carb-rich to consume immediately.

Since not all the carbs cannot be consumed by the body at once, all the excess carbs along with the dietary fats we take in, are stored in the body, eventually causing obesity, heart diseases, diabetes-insulin resistance, and low metabolic rates. On the other hand, if fats are consumed instead as the mere source of energy, they take time to digest and releases energy gradually and progressively. Along with energy fats are capable of producing ketones, these are antioxidant agents which can fight against harmful radicals and toxins in the body. It is due to these ketones that the ketogenic diet works best for mental reverberations. The ketones clean up all the toxic waste that results from brain activity. Ketosis is the driving force that makes the ketogenic diet work.

It can be achieved by maintaining the per meal carb intake up to 13 grams and increasing the amount of fat. Ketosis has several other known benefits, which indirectly improves human health. The production of ketones increases the production of mitochondria in the cells. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cells; their increased production cause a boost in energy. The production is particularly increased in the brain cells. This increased energy indirectly accelerates the rate of metabolism in the body.

Mitochondrial production can sustain the better health of the cells. The aging nerve cells can be repaired with the high production of ketones in the body. Ketones help in the reproduction of the damaged nerve cells and support in case of the nervous system malfunction.
