Types of Salads
While salads are nourishing and satisfying meals, they come in different forms are described below:
Caesar Salad
This salad is known for its dressing- creamy in nature. It is usually a combination of varied seasonings, lemon juice, parmesan cheese, olive oil, egg yolks, anchovies, and mustard.
When combined, you will get a creamy dressing that is always served on lettuce leaves, then parmesan and croutons on top.
Green Salad
Well, many salad recipes call for lettuce as one of the ingredients. Such a salad recipe is commonly known as a green salad. The lettuce salad comes in the form of the following:
Butterhead lettuce, Iceberg lettuce, Romaine lettuce, and Loose-leaf lettuce. Each recipe will always describe the type of lettuce to use.
Coleslaw
This is simply a combination of shredded fresh veggies tossed in a dressing. The dressing is usually a mixture of black pepper, sugar, vinegar, salt, and mayonnaise. While making coleslaw, always consider veggies with varied colors to give it a perfect look with bright colors. For instance, carrots, beets, and red cabbage make perfect examples.
Pasta Salad
Pasta, when cooked and mixed with other varied salad ingredients, it gives a totally different taste. While making pasta salads, always consider short pasta like a bow-tie, elbow, and corkscrews.
You can use different vegetables, meats, or even seafood when making pasta salads. You can even serve pasta salad as a main meal, especially when you have incorporated meat and seafood ingredients.
1. Mint and Watermelon Salad
The refreshing taste of mint and lime, combined with the sweet taste of watermelon, makes this salad more of a dessert.
Serving Size:
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp. avocado oil / light olive
- 2 tbsp. lime juice
- 1 cubed watermelon
- 1 tbsp. lime zest
- 1/4 cup minced mint
Instructions:
Take a small bowl and whisk together the avocado oil or olive, lime zest, lime juice, and mint.
Pour the mixture of lime juice over the watermelon cubes, and then toss until it is well coated. Place in a refrigerator and then serve cold.
2. Roasted Potato Leek Salad
Leeks have great flavor, especially when roasted. The edible parts of leeks are from the white bulbs to the pale green part of the stalk. This delicious salad takes a little longer to prepare than others, but most of the time is hands-off as the vegetable roast.
Serving Size:
Cooking Time: 25 Minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 lbs. cubed Yukon Gold potatoes
- 3 sliced leeks
- 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. red pepper flakes
- 8 oz. mixed greens
Honey Mustard Dressing:
- cup mayonnaise
- Black pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp. yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp. honey
- 1 tsp. white vinegar
- tsp. kosher salt
Instructions:
Take a small bowl, and whisk all the dressing ingredients together. Taste and add more honey, 1 tbsp. at a time, to your desired sweetness.
Preheat the oven to 425F.
On a baking sheet, toss the potatoes and leeks together with olive oil, salt, and red pepper flakes.
Roast in the oven for 25 minutes - the potatoes should be fork-tender, stirring once about halfway through.
After roasting, toss the potatoes, leeks, mixed greens, and 3 tbsps. of Honey Mustard Dressing together in a large bowl. Taste and add more dressing, if desired.
