My first introduction to the spirit world was when I was a teenager.
My mum suffered from depression when I was a child, following the birth of my youngest sister. It began as postnatal depression that wasnt effectively treated and worsened over the next year or so. At one point, she was quite unwell and was bedridden.
One night during this time, my mum opened her eyes to see her dad (my papa) standing at the foot of her bed, smiling warmly at her. He was like a photographic negative, semitransparent, mum later explained. He spoke to her with the words Everything is going to be OK. The following night her mum appeared, also offering reassurance. Papa had passed away a year earlier; granny, a year before then.
Mum didnt tell anyone for a few years, lest they questioned her sanity, given that she was suffering from depression at the time. But it was a completely real experience.
Recognizing my growing interest in the paranormal in my teenage years, other than my dad, I was the first person Mum shared this with. Learning of my mums personal experience made the idea of spirit communication all the more real to me.
My interest has grown over the years such that I have personally written on some aspects of the paranormal, including the possibility that consciousness is not confined to the brain but that its universal.
Reading The Medium in Manolos reminds us that we all have mediumship abilities to one degree or another. Through her lucid language, Lauren offers a step-by-step guide for developing our own abilities. She also teaches us that spirit can communicate in a multitude of ways.
It reminded me of a number of communications I received from my dog, Oscar, after he passed into the Spirit World in 2014. We were extremely close. Through Oscar, I came to understand what people meant when they described the loving bond we can have with animals. During the days following his passing, I received several indications that he was still around me.
The timing of his life was a sign in itself. He arrived in my life exactly two days before I began working on my book I Heart Me: The Science of Self-Love, and passed away exactly two days before I handed the final draft to my publisher. I learned more about self-love from Oscar than from any book Id ever read, talk Id ever listened to or any other experience Id had. I was left in no doubt that he came into my life to help me, perhaps even to save me. I believe that he left when the job he came to do was done. Somehow, that helped me to deal with the pain of losing him.
While reading this book, I was reflecting on many of the signs he sent me. One, in particular, was exceptionally clear. I was driving on the motorway on the day of a lunar eclipse and had pulled over into motorway services so that I could enjoy the experience.
I held up my phone and recorded a short video of part of the eclipse. Later, while watching the video, I was astonished to see, in perfect clarity, Oscars face holding a stick in his mouth. There was no mistaking it. Others could see it, too.
I stopped reading this book to find the video and watched it again several times, marvelling at the image of Oscar smiling back at me. Now its one of my most treasured videos.
I decided to take a short break before reading the next few chapters and opened the Twitter app on my iPhone. Right there in my immediate Twitter feed was a photo of a person with Oscar emblazoned on his chest in bold, capital letters. I simply smiled and thanked Oscar for still being an important presence in my life.
Lauren Robertson teaches us that we shouldnt ignore signs like these as random chance and simply dismiss them, but instead view them as genuine communications from our deceased loved ones. Its through acknowledging and trusting communications that we develop our mediumship abilities.
Lauren writes in a down-to-earth style that is both humorous and, at times, astonishingly real as she shares some of her own personal struggles. It takes courage as a teacher to admit your own perceived failings, but Lauren does so in such a way that encourages others to be honest with their own selves, too. Its through this honesty that were better able to develop more self-love, which makes us more rounded individuals and better able to tap into our latent abilities.
