Preface
Life is a series of ups and downs.
As long as things are in our favour fulfilling our expectations, we are happy and wish that this happiness should never end. But we all know that this seldom happens. While this is true, it is also a fact that misfortune can occur at any time in life. It could be anything - failure in examination, rejection in a job interview, loss in business, illness, stressful family life or even divorce. Amidst such problems, our immediate reaction is of confusion, depression, or even helplessness. While in distress the presence of timely advice can prove to be very helpful.
The book is an attempt in this direction. It gives me great pleasure in presenting this book, a comprehensive compilation of words of wisdom. It has been an enlightening and fulfilling effort for me to put together a large number of quotes drawn from varied sources. Reading has been a passion for me since my student days. My favourites include topics like the art of living, personality development, yoga and spirituality. Whenever Id come across a passage or quote that was appealing, Id note it down.
The fascination resulted in a huge collection of quotes; something I deemed appropriate to publish in the form of a book. There are close to 460 quotes, classified under nineteen groups on the basis of their content; with the exception of the last one that lies under the group Miscellaneous. I sincerely hope that amidst difficulties and setbacks, a glance through, can be illuminating and inspiring, enabling the reader to come out of depression and sadness and develop a positive attitude which is so important for success and happiness in life. BOOKS AND READING HABIT
Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.
Francis Bacon A home without books is a body without soul.
Victor Hugo To read without reflecting is like eating without digesting.
Edmund Burke What is wonderful about great literature is that it transforms the man who reads it towards the condition of the man who wrote.
E.M. E.M.
Forster If I read a book and it makes my body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know its poetry. Emily Dickinson If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again; there is no use in reading it at all. Oscar Wilde Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. Francis Bacon Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting. Aldous Huxley A good book is the best of friends, the same today and tomorrow. Martin Tupper Dont just say you have read books.
Show that through them you have learned to think better, to be a more discriminating and reflected person. Books are the training weights of the mind. They are very helpful, but it would be a bad mistake to suppose that one has made progress simply by having internalized their contents. Epictetus Read, not to contradict and confute; not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. Francis Bacon
