Discuss the three main functions of the nervous system, andgive an overview of its functioning.

    Basic and Applied Sciences

The nervous system has three main functions:

    1. Sensingperceive internal and external alterationsto the body.

    2. Integratingcompute sensory information tocommunicate to the body the correct action to take.

    3. Motortransmit information to the muscles of thebody when it is time to initiate movement and control this movement.

The human body uses sensory inputs to gather information aboutitself and the surrounding world. This information travels to the centralnervous system where the information will be processed and acted upon through aprocess called integration. The brain will make decisions based on theinformation gathered, or reject the information if necessary. If the braindecides to act on the information gathered, it initiates movement through motorpathways. Because the nervous system controls all human movement, it isimportant to train it to ingrain correct movement and improve reaction time.

Describe the brain and spinal cord in the context of thecentral nervous system.

    Basic and Applied Sciences

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The brain controls bodily processes consciously (e.g., higher thinking/mentalfaculties, voluntary muscle action, memory, etc.) and unconsciously (e.g.,heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digesting food, etc.). The spinal cordhas nerves that innervate major organs and muscles and initiate muscle movementor organ function at the command of the brain.

Describe what mechanoreceptors, muscle spindles, Golgi tendonorgans, and joint receptors are, where in the body they are located, and whattheir functions are. Detail the importance of each in terms of training.

    Basic and Applied Sciences

Mechanoreceptors reside in the joints and connectivetissues of the body (tendons, ligaments, and muscles). They sense changes inthe compression or stretching of the muscles or tissues. Muscle spindles, Golgitendon organs, and joint receptors are types of mechanoreceptors.

Muscles contain muscle spindles. They sense alterationin the length of the muscle and the rate of alteration. Muscle spindlescontract when they are stimulated to protect the muscle from overstretching.

Golgi tendon organs sense alteration in muscle tensionand the rate of alteration. Golgi tendon organs operate at the junction of amuscle and a tendon. Golgi tendon organs relax when they are stimulated toprotect the muscle from overstressing.

Joint receptors sense changes in speed in the joint. Jointreceptors sense overextension of the joint and respond to provide protectionfor it.

Describe the anatomical structure of the nervous system, including how sensory information is passed along this system. Discuss neurons, including afferent neurons, interneurons, and efferent neurons.

    Basic and Applied Sciences

The nervous system is composed of the central and peripheralnervous systems. The central nervous system includes the main organs ofthe nervous system: the brain and the spinal column. The peripheral nervoussystem includes all parts of the nervous system that branch off from thecentral nervous system, such as cranial and spinal nerves.

The nervous system consists of billions of neuronsspecialcells made up of a cell body, axon, and dendrite. Function determines neuronnomenclature:

Afferent neuronstransmit information from muscles andorgans to the central nervous system.

Interneuronstransmit information from neuron to neuron.

Efferent neuronstransmit information from the centralnervous system to muscles or glands.

Discuss the purpose of the skeletal system, and describe itstwo major sections.

    Basic and Applied Sciences

The skeleton provides a support system for the musclesand organs of the body and initiates movement. Additionally, the skeletalsystem protects major organs (heart, brain, etc.) and creates red blood cells(this takes place in the bone marrow). The skeletal system stores minerals(such as calcium and phosphorus) and releases them into the body, whichregulates mineral balance and promotes proper body function.

The skeletal system contains into two major sections: the axialskeletal system and the appendicular skeletal system. The axial skeletalsystem has nearly 80 bones and is composed of the head, spine, and ribcage. The appendicular system contains the appendages, the shoulders, and the hip complex. It has more than 120 bones.

    NASM

Discuss the importance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

    Basic and Applied Sciences

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounds the brain andcentral nervous system. It helps insulate and protect the brain and centralnervous system from hard blows to the head or unanticipated change in speed. The head and neck must be protected during sports play because a hard blow(e.g., tackle in football) could damage the brain and central nervous system bydisrupting the CSF.

Afferent neurons pass information to the brain via thespinal cord. Efferent neurons transmit information from the brain toeffector cells. Effector cells initiate action in the muscles or organs.Acute or chronic injury, illness, or inflammation can disrupt afferent andefferent pathways. If this occurs, messages will not travel efficiently to thebrain or the body. In extreme cases, the message will not travel at all.

Discuss the different types of bones, and give examples ofeach type.

    Basic and Applied Sciences

The skeleton is composed of long bones, short bones, flatbones, irregular bones, and sesamoid (round) bones. Examples of long bonesare the humerus and the femur. The shaft of a long bone, which is called thediaphysis, is made up of compact bone. The ends of a long bone are called theepiphyses, and these are made up of cancellous bone. The epiphyses are thesites of bone growth. Short bones are found in groups, and aid inmovement. This type of bone is found in the wrist and ankle. Examples of flatbones are the ribs, scapula, sternum, and cranial bones. The vertebrae, facial bones, and skull bones are irregular bones. Sesamoid bones arelocated within a tendon. The patella, for example, is a sesamoid bone.

Describe the two types of bone in the body.

    Basic and Applied Sciences

The two types of tissue that exist within human bones arecompact bone and spongy bone. Compact bone resides on the outer layer ofbones (the surface). Compact bone is very tough and serves a protectivefunction by allowing the bone to bear the entire weight of the body.
