CONTENTS

BY JENNIFER HUDSON

I still remember the day I met Liz for the first time. I was meeting with executives from Weight Watchers, and they brought Liz along to talk to me about what it would be like on the program. I had lost a good amount of weight on my own but had hit a plateau and just couldnt seem to get past it. I dont know what it was, maybe the fact that we were both Chicago girls, but Liz and I clicked right away. Still, when we started working together a couple of weeks after that meeting, I was shocked by how much she totally got me and where I was coming fromI mean, she was this thin, sporty, professional weight-loss expert! But she had been there. She knew what it was like to try to lose weight and fail, or to lose some and gain it all back. She even had a one-year-old son: my son was a newborn at the time, and Liz understood the lack of sleep and the amazing new life I was experiencing as a mom, because she was living it, and that meant a lot to me. She gave me support I didnt even know I was missing.

All my past diet attempts made me pretty smart about what to eat, which is part of why it was so frustrating to still not be where I wanted to be. Ill bet a lot of you can relateI could probably recite calorie counts in my sleep, but there I was. What Liz helped me do was make these tiny tweaks to my plan that made all the difference. She spent a ton of time talking about small, healthy changes I could make that would not throw my life out of whack, things that seemed almost too easy. I wont lie; I thought she was crazy some of the time. Especially at first, when she told me I could eat all of my favorite foods. No way, I thought. This is never going to get the weight off. So I decided I knew better and made stricter rules for myself. This didnt work at all, of course, and Liz knew exactly what I was doing. She sat me down and asked me to give her way a chance. Trusting her was the best decision I ever made for my health. She helped me understand that awareness was where I needed to focus, being aware of my habits and planning ahead to make it easier to make good choices. She lovingly guided me back to pizzago ahead and have that pizza, Jen, just make a habit of eating a huge salad before you grab a slice. That salad filled me up enough that it kept me to just one or maybe two pieces. One piece of pizza never made anyone gain weight, its all the pieces that usually come after it! Actually, Liz even taught me to make my own pizza, and that became a family thing. Now Make Your Own Pizza Night is one of my favorite family traditions.

Involving my family was an incredible gift that Liz gave me. She was a great source of support, but she knew I would need more than just her if my weight loss was going to be a lasting thing. The more people around me on my team and in my family who knew what I was doing, and could support me, the better. She started my entire extended family across the country losing weight, and I mean I have a big family. Together nearly seventy-five of us lost over 2,000 pounds. This incredible system of support made it so that each time I returned home or went to a family gathering, everyone was on the same page. Liz has a great chapter in this book about support, and advice on how to find support or even build your own Target 100 group. Know that it works! With my family all trying to make changes together, it was a lot easier and more fun; our big family meals were suddenly a lot healthier because we were all trying to help each other reach our goals.

My relationship with Liz continues to be one of the most important to my own goal of living a full and healthy life. We connected from that first day in Chicago, and that bond has only grown stronger, even when were 3,000 miles away from each other. I hope you will let what Liz has to say touch you, that you will really take it in. Rethink this journey, not as another diet but a step-by-step life change that will transform so much more than just your weight. Her lessons come from a place of deep understanding, and she cares more than you will ever know. She cheered me on the entire way with loving kindness, and helped me understand that getting weight off wasnt about being perfect, but instead about creating a programa lifethat I could live with. Im very lucky, and I love what I do, but my life has some challenges. I might have to fly across the globe at the drop of a hat, managing time changes, jet lag, and not knowing where or how to get a healthy meal in a new town or country. Im always in front of people, and everyone notices my weight. There are long hours and lots of late nights, and Im always trying to find that balance between taking care of myself, my career, my family. Its not always easy, and I know it wont always be easy for you. But I also know that you can do this!
