Guide
A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, I got my copy of a new book from one of my favorite female entrepreneurs. Years earlier I had learned that she was one of the very first female entrepreneurs who was doing exactly what I wanted to do in business. She had served hundreds of thousands of women across the globe, made millions of dollars empowering other women to do the same, supported incredible charities, and spoke on some of the most sought-after stages. This woman was unstoppable.
I was excited to sit down and sink my time and energy into her brand-new, widely anticipated book. I couldnt wait to learn new business strategies and hear her take on how to overcome lifes challenges and become successful. But most important, I was excited to get to know her. I wanted to know about her struggles, her vulnerable moments, her trials and tribulations, with the hope that, maybe, I would see a piece of myself in her and not feel so alone.
As I began to read her book, I quickly realized that almost everything in it was just transcriptions of her past speaking engagements, webinars, and online programs. At this point, I knew this womans work so well that I started to paraphrase what was coming in the next chapters before I even got there. I made it about a quarter of the way through, put the book on my bookshelf, and never opened it again. I was underwhelmed. I had wanted so much more. I had wanted her.
I knew that if I was ever given the opportunity to write a book (and actually have people read the damn thing, no less), I would make sure to bring the one thing that I want when I read a book: authenticity.
Heres the truth: Ive never written a book. I was never taught how to write a book. Im the absolute worst at grammar, and dont know the first thing about editing. But I do know what its like to have the desire to share your story. I do know the impact of seeing yourself in someone else that goes beyond a curated Instagram picture. I do know what it feels like to want more from a leader you admire than the generalized just be yourself statements (if it were that easy, this book wouldnt exist).
Most important, I do know the courage you can gain from seeing someone else do something youve always wanted to do.
And that is why this book exists. This book contains completely new, personal material, in a way that I have never shared before. For some of you, this information may be shocking based on my persona or what youre used to seeing from me. For others, it may be the warm, welcomed hug that youve wanted me to share for some time now.
I poured my heart into this book because I wanted to give you the authentic me. This isnt to say that my podcast and my coaching arent authentic, but Ive always had a bit of a lets focus down and get shit done energy between me and my community because I pride myself on being results-focused. But Im discovering that results can also come from being vulnerable and sharing more of my genuine self.
For our time together here, Ive torn those walls down to share my experience, with the intention that it gives you the strength and hope to do the same in your own lives. You cant get what you want until you know what you want. And in order to know what you want, you need to be honest with yourself. It took me a long time to pinpoint who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. This isnt a story about overnight success. This is the story of a woman who found out what was holding her back and created a new path to get what she wanted and got it.
