Executive Summary

THE 2017 OREILLY DESIGN SALARY SURVEY exploresthe landscape of modern design professionals, giving detailsabout their roles and how much they earn. The results arebased on data from our online survey that collected 1,085responses. We pay special attention to variables that correlatewith salary, but this report isnt just about moneywe presenta range of information, including the popularity of designtools, tasks, and organizational processes.

In what is now our second salary survey, we find someconsistency as to what matters in thefield of design: that the better-payingdesign jobs tend to concentrate in techcenters; that experience matters morethan age; that knowing more tools, working with more people in a widervariety of roles, and working for largerorganizations all correlate with higher wages. And, in a signthat some things in the design world resist change (in somecases, whether we like it or not), we still see women makingless than men and that most designers still use pen and paperas their primary design tool.

Note

Designers reporting no process earn the least

Some key findings include:

  • The West Coast (CA, WA, OR) has the highest salariessalaries are high even relative to those states percapita GDP

  • Healthcare, banking, and computers/hardwarerespondents report the highest salaries

  • Respondents from large companies report highersalaries

  • Agile is the most popular design process; however, those using LeanUX or a hybrid ofdifferent processes earn the most

  • Designers reporting no processearn the least

  • Higher earners use a widerselection of tools

  • For prototyping andwireframing, salaries are highestamong those that use Sketch

We hope that you will find the information in this report useful. Ifyou can spare 510 minutes, please go ahead and take the surveyyourself.

Introduction

FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING, we at OReilly Mediahave conducted a survey for designers, gathering informationabout their compensation and details about their work. Thisyear, 1,085 people from 48 countries tookthe survey. Respondents are mostly UX,product, and graphic designers, but thereare also a fair number of developers andother professionals involved in productdesign. The survey was conducted online, collecting responses from December 2015to December 2016.

Note

1,085 people from 48 countries took the survey.

While typical for online surveys, the methodology we usedof a self-selecting, uncontrolled respondent pool can lead toless than ideal results. However, the broad range of respondentsgeographies, industries, and company sizes helpsmitigate the issues associated with a small, narrow sample.

Throughout the report, we quote median salary statistics forvarious groups of people, such as those respondents whoused a certain tool or came from a particular industry. Sincethese figures can be misleading if thevariable in question correlates with geographyor experience, we also sometimesquote a median adjusted salary.Technical details are in .

Note

In the horizontal bar charts throughout this report, we includethe interquartile range (IQR) to show the middle 50% ofrespondents answers to questions such as salary. One quarterof the respondents has a salary below the displayed range, and one quarter has a salary above the displayed range.

Salary Overview

THE MEDIAN SALARY OF THE ENTIRE SAMPLE IS $77K,with the middle half earning between $50K and $109K. Thismiddle half statistic is called the interquartile range, andwe show it in many of the graphs to give a sense of the salaryspread for various groups of respondents. The spread is verybroad, but this isnt surprising given the diversity of professionalbackgrounds among respondents and the fact that theycome from locations with very different overall wage levels.

Most respondents report some gain in salary over the pastthree years, and about 10% of the sample saw their salariesdouble. Another third has wage growth of 30% to 100%(also across the last three years). Respondents who have nowage growth tend to have lower salaries (median of $50K),but otherwise theres no clear pattern between salary growth(as a percentage) and current salary.

Geography

TWO-THIRDS OF THE SAMPLE IS FROM THE UNITED STATES,and 20% is from Europe. After the US, the most wellrepresented countries in the sample are Canada (5%), theUnited Kingdom (4%), Germany (2%),Russia (2%), and Australia (2%).

For US-based respondents, a disproportionateshare comes from theWest Coast: 37% of the sample isfrom California, Washington, andOregon (states containing only 16%of the US population). New York andMassachusetts also have disproportionately high response rates. The skew in the geographic distribution of respondents likelyreflects that the OReilly audience and design-related jobs tend toconcentrate in tech-centric coastal cities.

Salaries vary sharply across geography; however, in mostcases, country and state variations mirror the local economy.Per capita GDP is a good predictor of salary, although somecountries in Western Europe, includingItaly, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal, have lower thanexpected salarieslikely reflectinghow different recovery rates fromthe 2008 recession and different taxand social safety net regimes affectwages. In the US, the West Coaststates (CA, OR, WA) have higher salaries relative to their percapita GDP, which, combined with their higher response rates, may indicate a relatively high demand for design jobs on theWest Coast, helping to push up wages.

Note

In most cases, country and state variations mirror the local economy.
