To my parents, who modeled marriage done well
for more than 60 years.
I love you. Thanks
.

After finishing this manuscript, but before it went to press, I lost my dad to bone and liver cancer. Since this page is set aside for acknowledgments, Id like to acknowledge him. Ever so briefly.

As I am the writer in the family, the task of crafting my fathers obituary fell to me, which turned out to be a puzzle and a privilege. At the very least, it made me think about what my own kids might write about me someday.

Ken Payleitner was an elementary-school principal for 32 years. In the weeks since he passed, Ive heard stories from dozens of former students and teachers about his compassion, open-door policy, and kid-friendly approach to education. Those firsthand recollections were good to hear. Its satisfying to think that his impact on real lives continues.

Dad was one of the few remaining World War II vets, a skilled carpenter, a tree planter, a fisherman, and a diehard Cubs fan. He desperately loved his four kids, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and my momhis bride of more than 60 years. He was also an excellent father-in-law, which is no small thing. His legacy is firmly in place.

I loved him a lot and he knew it. When I was a boy, he was an involved dad, which I did not fully appreciate until much later. Still, it was the conversations I had with him over the last decade that will stick with me most. Dialogues about spiritual truths and the meaning of life. We were both lifelong learners.

The idea of being married six decades should not be a big deal. The formula is simple. Get married in your 20s and live into your 80s. Whats tough about that? You get out of bed for 22,000 mornings in a row, brush your teeth, kiss your wife, and do the work God puts in front of you. My dad lived the biblical instruction, Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
